It would appear to be good news for women.

Vaccine "could cut cervical cancer deaths 76 pct"

LONDON (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline's experimental vaccine against a virus that causes cervical cancer could cut the number of cases and deaths from the illness by up to 76 percent, the drug company said on Monday.

The vaccine known as Cervarix prevents infection from two strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) which account for about 70 percent of cases of cervical cancer.

I have doubts about the research. *shrug* And any time they start proposing giving an "experimental" vaccine to all women of childbearing age... it's a scary thought... smacks more of profit than life-saving heroics to me...

First off there have been a couple of threads about this vaccine.

Second, while I approve of the vaccine being made available, and cheaply to those who want it I don't think enough research has been done to make it a mandatory vaccination. (Yes I have followed this with great interest. I do not like it when a young woman shows up on my unit having just had a Hysterectomy and knowing that her chances are low because Cervical Cancer is usually found in the latter stages.)

I also follow all other advances in the fight against Cancer as well as other diseases.

What distresses me is the roadblocks thrown up against the research into some of these diseases, roadblocks thrown up by those who do not wish the diseases eradicated for their own personal reasons. What are these reasons? Usually they are either the risk of losing financial gain, or the risk of losing a controlling power over some segment of the population.
