On 10/13/09 the USS New York left a Louisiana Shipyard for New York, where it will be formally commissioned on November 2. It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

She was built with an included 24 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center. Her motto is "Never Forget."

As someone who lost a relative in the Trade Center that day, I can't help but be touched.

From the website:

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, the yet-to-be commissioned ship will come to a halt in the Hudson River. There, opposite the former World Trade Center site, USS NEW YORK (LPD-21) will dip her colors, fire a 21-gun salute to the people of her namesake city and state, and proceed to Pier 88 to be formally inducted into the Fleet five days later at a shipboard ceremony.

At the Monday-morning event, members of the Fire Department of New York, the New York Police Department, the NY/NJ Port Authority Police, members of 9/11 victims' families and military service veterans will gather onshore at New York’s World Financial Center to return the salute.
