Not even sure the name is right.

But somone, or someones who know about this shit - can you give me a nutshell? And keep checking in here - I think I'm going to have some questions.

Yes I know about them, you can find anything on them too. Very useful. You need a software to access them (you can with your browser too but better with a software) and the mail news server provide by your provider.
When I say you find anything I say ANYTHING to porn, games, movies, ebooks, software, picture, help, support, discussion place and so on.

Google offers complete 20-year Usenet Archive with over 700 million messages:

um i guess its the same as newsgroups ? i use them sometimes basically your ISP will usually have newsgroups so you just need a reader (forte agent is pretty good) and to know the name of your newsgroup server for your ISP ... the newsgroup reader will download a list of the groups from your ISP and you just visit the ones you want (its quite hard to find things you want)

you have discussion forums on newsgroups and also binaries forums which will contain files such as pictures mp3s etc that the reader can download/view

I heard you can find anything. *grin* That's why I'm interested. I want a working knowledge, some basics so I can go and lurk a while and figure the rest out. It's a whole new world.

Really I just want some movies ;)

Usenet is the original "Bulletin Board" of the Internet. It's made up of thousands pf subject based "Newsgroups" where people post anything they want. I would guess half of all the threads are spam these days. There are two ways to access it: Go to Google and click on Groups or contact your ISP for the server address that carries Usenet. Then download free software from Download.com (Free Agent is the best and easiest) and connect.

By the way, there are more porn pics and video clips there than you could imagine.

Right, I'm running Free Agent. But how do you find anything? THere is Soooooo much out there, so many heirachies, that all seem to cross over, it's insane. Like trying to find the end of a 10 mile ball of string.

the groups that are useful start with alt.binaries.********

mostly thats the best place to sort of search ... (i find xnews easier try that :)) ... free agent isnt very good because of it being free you cant sort by subject the registered one you can though (fotre agent)
