OK, let's give this a try.
Fot starters, if you have an ISP account, you probably have access to newsgroups (usenet).
Quite a lot of the old BBS traffic moved to usenet because it supported the ability to access messages and files without requiring users to to dial in to a dedicated access point.
However, unlike a BBS, files and messages are not available indefinitely, and there are no membership requirements (fees, passwords, etc); as long as you have access to a news server, you have access to newsgroups.
Depending on the provider, there are about 40,000 - 80,000 or so newsgroups out there. They are not all media groups. Their or technical discussion groups, User Support Groups, Fan Groups - any number of groups covering any number of topics.
However, you pervs are interested in the alt.*.* groups. As the name implies, the prefix "alt" indicates alternative topics. There are a whole slew of groups here, some with picture (jpeg and gif) files, some with movie files (mpeg, avi, real media and quick time) and some with story files (doc and txt). Again, depending on the provider, the groups can span any known kink and perversion.
Now, for those of you afflicted with Windows (hey, I'm one too!), you can access newsgroups with two items: the name of your ISP's news server, and Outlook Express.
I wouldn't recommend using either.
Outlook Express is clunky, plus, many files are both encoded and posted in multiple parts that have to be decoded and combined. Unless you're a geek (Riff!), you don't want to be going there - it's not overly complicated, but it is a pain in the ass.
There are, however, several free news readers out there that do a reasonably good job of assembling parts and decoding them. Some of the better ones are:
Microplanet Gravity (my favorite)
Xnews
Free Agent (as well as it's shareware brother Agent)
These all do a relatively good job of incorporating encoding standards into the software, aren't that difficult to configure, and gets you happy and horny with a minimum of fuss.
Now, as to news group access, your ISP's servers are fine, but keep in mind that not only do they log all of your activity (this is the information age), but they also append identifying information (email address, ISP info) to anything that you posts. Opens the Spam floodgates, as well as lets the world know what you're doing, reading, etc. Not horrible, but a bit of a pain in the ass, don't you think?
There are several inexpensive third parties out there that have more liberal (or less strict) logging policies and do not include information in posts that would identify you to the general populace unless someone was able to obtain records from the company providing the access (which usually requires a court order, and if you're travelling down that path you have other issues anyway). Generally, these are only a couple of bucks (10ish or so) a month for a fairly large amount of stuff. Some of the better services are:
Uncensored News
EasyNews
There are others, but thi swas really only to give you the general idea.
With a new sreader and decent access you can access more pictures and video than you would EVER be able to get through the peer to peer networks, and in much faster time.
Hope this makes some sense...
