Handprints offered this excellent post on a more political thread, and I think that it really deserves to be seen by everyone. It's some wonderful, clear, detailed, and yet broadly applicable advice on how average layhorse should go about investing its money. I've given to understand that it would work pretty well for humans too. Just please do read his requests not to PM him with pleas for stock picks or tax law - I'd hate for him to regret such a generous and helpful post. :)

But Shang, while the article is good, it presupposes that the reader, whehter equine or not, actually has some money to invest. :(

True. But it also usefully applies boot to rump with that 20% figure. It's a gentle reminder that living within one's means does not simply mean balancing the checking account.

I missed this simply because it was on a political thread, which I scrupulously avoid.

Thanks for re-posting it Shang.

Good advice overall.

Pay yourself first.

Invest before you spend.

I would add an International Stock Fund to the portfolio if it was me.

Other than that, a good blueprint for a comfortable retirement. :D

Delighted to. I had a hunch that quite a lot of people would miss it because of where it appeared, and that seemed awfully unfair both to the excellent post and to the people who could learn from it. :)

Oooh, good stuff. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. And, thanks to Handprints, who is crafty like ice is cold. ;) A lot of people have money sitting in crappy savings accounts or are taking a beating in their 401k, but are too scared to make changes. Uh, I'm not one of them, but if I was, I'd definitely look into this.

Good Heavens, woman... it is what imagination is for!

Thanks for pulling this out Shang, sound advice for the young 'uns.

No single piece of advice is perfect for everyone... that said, there is some DAMN good advice in this post.

I highly advise copy/pasting it and saving it. I've been in the more conservative side of a similar business for almost the last decade and I thought it was very insightful and I just copy/pasted it myself.

This is worth saving, people. Seriously.
