Here

and Here for the root article.

Considering the amount of fuel the AF uses, it might make a difference in Oil import costs.

Impressive, to say the least. It's the kind of green tech even a Tea Party Fascist could love. No money ends up in the pockets of either the Arabs or the Venezuelans. Sweet!

The fact that it's CO2 neutral is just an added by-product. ;)

Makes me curious to know what the military pays per gallon of jet fuel now.

What exactly is so GREEN about burning oil from any source? Oil is oil.

If you wanna be GREEN burn hydrogen whose exhaust emission is water.

Baby steps so we don't scare the Oil Barons, Jimbo.

Think of the new Motto for the Air Force, "Global Power, from Pond Scum!" :D

While hydrogen does have potential... before getting overly excited it might be wise to interview the passengers abord the Hindenberg (who only used it as a lifting gas... Ie a big storage tank) and the astronauts abord Challenger who did use hydrogen as a fuel.

Who do you think they buy the pond scum from?

There is a never ending supply in Florida, but cultivation allows the raising of one type modified for Oil extraction.

Or recycling Republicans might be the way to a brighter world.

:D

Presuming there's sufficient refining capacity for algae based oil that's of a quality to be used in jet engines, tank motors, ships of the line, etc. the military could conceivably be energy independent in a few years...a definite advantage in time of war. :D

Although energy independence will remove one of the major reasons for going to war.

Except for the standard one: great photo ops! ;)

Can't you just see Mitch McConnell standing in front of a pond of heaving scum, holding the "Stimulus Check" While a guy in a hard hat holds the other end.

The circle of life, "pond scum to pond scum"

And aviation fuel is what, petrified pig piss? AvGas brought down the Twin Towers, too.

And JP-4 BURNS and does so relatively slowly. It brought down the twin towers by SLOWLY MELTING the structural supports.

JP-4 doesn't really like to burn but if you work at it, it will.

Pure hydrogen on the other hand... really really wants to combine with oxygen in an explosive combination. It's hard to stop.

You don't see them using avgas or JP-4 in rockets. You do see hydrogen there.

The real distinction is that Bio-Fuel doesn't release CO2 that has been sequestered for millions of years, unless they use coal co2, but still we'd get two passes at energy before the CO2 gets into the atmosphere again.

There is also Bio-plastics, just getting started which could be a significant factor in reducing our imported Oil problem.

The Hindenberg burned, too. It didn't explode.

The Challenger exploded because it was full of Liquid Oxygen.

Pure Hydrogen is less dangerous than natural gas or propane, but nobody panics over using those as fuels -- even for public transportation.

The Hindenberg was an impressive disaster, but fewer passengers and crew died there than died when the Concorde crashed (iirc) and the Concorde exploded because of leaking jet fuel.

So JP4 cooks you medium well instead of well?
