VANCOUVER — With medals now assured in men's hockey and the team pursuit in men's long track speedskating, the USA is guaranteed to at least tie its best-ever Winter Olympic performance.
It is also two steps closer to topping the overall medal count for the first time since the 1932 Lake Placid Games.

The U.S. men's hockey team advanced Friday afternoon to Sunday's gold-medal game with a 6*1 semifinal win over Finland. The U.S. long track speedskating men advanced to the gold medal final after upsetting the Netherlands in Friday's semifinal. Medals in hockey and the team pursuit represent the USA's 33rd and 34th.

The USA still has several more chances to medal. In short-track speedskating tonight, U.S. star Apolo Anton Ohno will compete in the 500 meters and the men's relay and teammate Katherine Reutter is a contender in the 1,000 meters.

The USA is reaching historic levels in the medals tables — U.S. athletes already have won more than they ever have in a Games held on foreign soil — after unexpected success in Alpine skiing and a breakthrough in Nordic combined.

"Having actually contributed a fair amount to that medal count," says Billy Demong, whose gold in the individual large hill event Thursday was one of four U.S. Nordic combined medals, the USA's first Olympic medals in the sport, "(teammate) Johnny (Spillane) and I were talking about it last night, saying, 'Could we? Could we finally win the medal count?'"

"It's amazing," Demong says.
