I remember when the Army ads were like the Russian ad.

It was the 1980s.

Back when I was in Europe with the Army (and we are talking decades ago), Soviet soldiers were brought to East Germany straight off the streets and were trained from Day 1 with active units.
Hazing was brutal and routine. About what you'd expect from a communist regime.

I don't know what the situation is today, but if they are looking for lifers, I imagine the routine is a bit more appetizing for young men.
