US store openings currently outpace closures by 20%, report says

Trump supporters want to belive stores are closing because of ricing crime, but crime is declining, so stores are opening. .

I would be interested in seeing the same data year over year. In 2023, what was the difference? I briefly searched for this but couldn't locate it ..will try later when I have more time.

It’s not a national problem. It’s specific to certain cities and counties with lenient laws, lax enforcement, and left wing DAs. Much of the problem and attention is focused on certain cites in California such as San Francisco. It’s not just Trump supporters who are tired of it.

Doesn't mean what you think it means

Who is closing, how many employees

Who is opening, how many employees

https://nrf.com/blog/store-closing-announcements-2023

For all of 2023, significant U.S. retailers announced plans to open about 5,890 new stores, down from about 7,860 announced openings for all of 2022, and announced plans to close about 4,070 stores, more than two times higher than the approximately 1,680 store closings announced in 2022 according to analytical work by The Daily on Retail, an investor-oriented consumer research platform.

Thank you. I do think it's beneficial to see historical data for comparison of current good or bad data. Also, I had forgotten about Bed Bath and Beyond closing all of their stores last year after Overstock buying them.
No problem. I agree that seeing historical data was needed. I’m a data geek. I went to the source in the article. They wanted $3500 to see their report.

Why then are national chains closing stores NATIONALLY?

lol. Of course.
Per your article, more stores are opening than closing on a national basis. That’s a positive development. Cities like San Francisco are experiencing a different phenomenon.

That sounds like you have specific store closing data for San Francisco.

San Francisco in the shits.

I can dig up the same info for Chicago and a few other select "woke" cities.

Further, the piece of shit that started this thread did so with the premise that conservatives revel in these sort of statistics, we don't. We do point out that they are a natural consequence of certain behaviors.

Well, the national data for 2023 was down as well. The data presented was for 2024.

What's a "woke city" Captain Franzia?

That sounds like you have specific store closing data for San Francisco.
Macys, North Face, J Crew, Nordstrom, Whole Foods, Starbucks, Madewell, L’Occitane, Sephora, Safeway to name a few.

Granted, none of these retail brands are familiar to the OP, but their closures are immediately recognized by anyone who has been to Union Square or a Giants game over the past few years, or anyone who reads the SF Chronicle.

He said "MAGATs" not conservatives, which are two very different animals. Sober folks understand this distinction.
