US Courts Adjudicate International Cases

I just really don't like having any authority presiding over the US that has not been elected or been appointed by an elected person. Who would the world court then be accountable to? I can see that deciding international law in the states is out of line, but even with judgements, how can they be enforced?

I don't have the answers, but I just don't like international authority. Absolute power breeds absolute corruption. The only thing I remember from my history lessons.

I share your reservations, UC. :)

I don't blame Bush at all for nixing the idea of an international criminal court. Do we really want international politics polluting the justice system even more? It seems obvious to me that it wouldn't be long after setting up a court of this kind that it would become little more than just another tool of governments to attack each other via trumped up charges and allegations. I'm sure terrorist-friendly nations like Iran and Libya are absolutely salivating at the idea of finally getting some Americans in court after we've locked so many of their terrorists away.

And it's not just an issue of America. Why would any nation that respects the basic rights of its citizens want to submit those same citizens to a system which will just use them as pawns? The American justice system has a lot wrong with it, but relatively speaking, it's pretty good. I'd rather take my chances with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights behind me than with some UN charter.

I know the rules of extradition suck and having to deal with a different justice system in every country is a pain in the ass, but what we would potentially lose from an international court seems to outweigh the potenial gain. I value my civil rights and my country does a creditable job to protect them. I'm not so trusting of the rest of the world, especially with much of it having a bone to pick with America.
