Hasmi, a US citizen arrested in the US, is in solitary confinement. The evidence against him is secret (from him and his attorneys.) and he's never been charged.

The defenders of the Constitution and BR are strangely silent.

Tio, elsewhere, commented on the supremacy of "individual rights" in the US, versus the Canadians' allowance for 'collective rights.' He confuses the *language* of the BR (ideals) with the issue of its implemention (actuality); the actual freedom of citizens, which is less in the US, than in a number of countries, e.g. Canada, Sweden.

Another legacy from the Bush Admin that Obama didn't fix?

No doubt that's "Hope we can believe in?"

You are so right, jackluise!

You would think that Obama would have cleaned up every single dog-turd that Bush left behind, by now-- it's been an entire year, and it's not like everyone has been sneering at him and doing their damndest to subvert his attempts. He should be able to rise above the crap effortlessly, and clean the entire Agean Stables.

Sheesh, what kind of wimp fake-o hercules is he, anyway?

I agree, what kind of hero is he? He said that Gitmo would be closed, not so you'd notice.

He said that he's bring the troops home, oh he meant by moving them to Afghanistan along the way?

He promised that the health care reconciliation would be on C-Span, oops I guess he forgot that the Senate takes their dividing the spoils of pork barreling should be done in secrecy?

Yeah, I think he found that prying the fingers of the oligarchy off the reigns of power is more difficult than he thought. Silly newbie he.:)

Oh and the best thing, he wants to look ahead, not back. Okay, don't look back look forward to a bright shiny City on the hill where the Law is enforced and traitors are shot, everyman has his day in court and the government looks after the people and not the Mill-Industry-Wall Street crowd.

No I'm convinced he is another shill for the establishment. Too bad.

Let's try this again. He's a lawyer from a top law school. He was a Senator. All his working life he's been in "public service". Uh, what part of 'Governing Class' do you not understand?

BTW, Ron Paul is, too, so don't look for any relief that way, all protestations to the contrary.

If you are surprised at how difficult it is to pull, as you say, the fingers of the oligarchy off the reins of power-- I am not.

HOPE is never "a done deal."

And you can whine and whimp about how he isn't doing everything perfectly all at once, or you can get your potato ass activated, knowing that for ONCE-- your president is actually supportive of you.

Ask what you can do for your country. And do that.

Ah, shoot, but I had such hopes for him to be a Constitutionalist with the heart of a Lion, to take the retched mess that Bush left him and aggressively attack the rot in the American Republic!

In my dreams he took the politics out of the Justice Department and prosecuted Dick and W for war crimes. He had C-Span cover Dicks execution at the tomb of the Unknowns and had a few Senators lined up for after,

Alas. It was not to be. My hope is fading into grief that Obama allowed himself to become a Corporate man, taking orders from those shadowy boardrooms and has not the guts to say, "Enough! Here is the law, here is the truth, Bush and Cheney were Dupes of the Establishment and ...."

And so is he.

I do what I can. My Senators are sick of hearing from me. Both are "liberals" although it seems in name only. Mealy mouths dip shits in my opinion.

My Congressman is a jackbooted apologist for the Bush years, so he is less than happy for me to call him that.

My state reps are affiliated with the forces of the status qoe and my Governor is ineffective, but I do what I can and don't expect much from my government but setups for Jon Stewart.

I'm just tired of seeing the gutless try to be "Leaders" when they are actually followers, spouting the talking points and not discussing the real issues that confront us. Like campaign finance reform and adherence to the law for all.

Obama may not be perfect but compared to Sarah and John, at least he's literate. That's more than I can say about Bush.

What part of "ALL MEN ARE ... Endowed by their Creator..." doesn't the President and the Supreams understand. The rights of the individual must be respected. Even if it's a Terrorist! The unlimited detentions and lack of charges is totally against the foundations of our Republic. So what if he loaned out his cell phone. so charge him with something of let him go. He can be removed if he's going to be a danger. That's why the Neo-Con's built Blackwater!

No, respect of the law and faith in the law require our courts to be a full participant in the process. What we have here is a failure to conform to the law and will result in the further disrespect for Truth, Justice and the American Way!

Pure,

I'm far too experienced to be naive about the reality of rights in the US. And Hasmi may well join Sacco and Vanzetti, Joe Hill and thousands of others who suffered for exercising their rights. I even enjoyed the attentions of my own personal FBI man, not to mention the rocks and a few bullets from my more conservative neighbors in New York for my activities in the Peace and Civil Rights movements in the 1960s.
My point was that the Constitution and the B of R recognized the value of dissent and gave a basis for the arguments in support of it. And it does have some currency still: try a visit to the NPS site of Manzanar in the Owens Valley of California, and see what even a Government Agency can say in defense of rights.
