Gotta buy a new freezer for the house and I need to choose a type. I prefer s chest freezer? What us your preference and why.

chest...upright self defrosting dries food out...not for long term storage. if its just short term like a weeks worth of food the upright isn't bad but it won't keep stuff in good shape for months

Only real drawback of a chest freezer is that stuff gets buried. I might prefer an upright if it's all freezer and has racks.

Chest is the best for long term storage.

Never ever get a frost free freezer......

I have both, and each have their good and bad points.
Upright fits into my kitchen, takes minimal space, and I can put stuff on top. Not to forget, easy cleaning! Can't fit big joints of meat though, and opening the door for a few mins brings the temp of anything close to the door up a bit.
Chest freezer stays much colder, fits a lot more (including big joints) and holds the cold better if I have to leave the lid open while looking for something. Downside is there's minimal shelving so you have to be more organised or you could lose things in the bottom, and it is basically dead space as you can't put anything on top and it has a bigger footprint. And it's a lot harder to clean.

I prefer the chest freezer, easier to put the bodies in to.

Definitely need a non frost-free for long term storage, as they maintain their frost free state by cycling into defrost and freeze modes alternately, which is hell on food for the long term. Chest freezers are generally just freeze and maintain, so they keep food long term very well. The long term storage also means you don't have to have as easy access, and the stuff in chest freezers getting buried on the bottom is not an advantage when you want ready availability.

The cold air falls out of the upright freezer when the door is opened and the warm air that replaces it has to be cooled. The chest freezer contains the cold air when the door is opened.

Sheesh........upright freezers should be banned!

So what you're saying is...chest freezers keep the bodies colder.

My personal preference is the upright with no shelves. This allows the bodies to be stored in their natural state and really gives your friends a fright when you send them out to get some iced cream.

It's hard to get mulitple in that way though.
