I've got a six-year-old MacBook Pro...specifically:
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010)
Processor 2.66GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
I just replaced the 500GB hard drive with an OWC
1TB Mercury Electra 3G SSD 2.5" Serial-ATA 7mm
Solid-State Drive. The 4GB or ram was upgraded
with an 8.0GB OWC Memory Upgrade Kit - 2x 4.0GB
PC8500 1066MHz 204 Pin. And since the original
battery was beginning to swell up, I replaced that as
well. Bought the parts from Amazon for $466.98.
I can't believe the speed increases I've got now.
Prior to the upgrades, the time from a cold start to
the desktop took around 1 min 45 seconds.
Afterwords: 22.6 seconds! I forgot to time
how fast Photoshop CC used to be but now it only
takes 7.7 seconds! Before, it took at about a
minute–minute & a half. I also have some before &
after screenshots from the Blackmagic Disk Speed
Test app (Pics below). I highly recommend it if
you've got an old 2010 like mine.

FYI: I was going to buy the 6G SDD from OWC but
confirmed from one of their tech support guys to get
the 3G model instead. I guess there is a known issue
with the 6G models running at 1.5G speeds on 2010
Macbook Pros.
I highly recommend going the upgrade route if
you've got an old Macbook and want to squeeze a bit
more life out of it.
