Update on main site translation

Still working on getting the stories moved over, but please have a look at version 1.0 of the Portuguese site translation:

There are some pages (like some of the rules/FAQs) that are not yet in the language system - those will still be in English, but most of the site should be translated now.

Good, bad, somewhere in between? Let me know what you think!

Manu, I'm impressed. It was a lot faster than I imagined, and a much better first translation than I thought. There is a definite accent in there, but not in any way annoying.

A couple of things I would have translated differently. Right now I'm a bit pressed for time and need to run out the door, but I'll get back later tonight and comment on those.

I've gone over the index page, for now, and here is what I think. In bold is the original English, in red the current translation, in blue how I would have translated, and in regular text any detailed comments.

- "Submeta" is a better translation in context, I think. "Envie" has me stuck on the snail-mail "send" image;
- "Inicie", instead of "Iniciar", simply because it's more correct. All other phrases are on imperative mode, directed at "you", and only "Iniciar" was on basic infinitive;
- "Assine" is the literal translation, but only used to sign-up for a newsletter, for example. When signing-up for a website, we register as a member, therefore "Registre-se". In Standard Portuguese, the spelling would be "Registe-se", but it's better have a good translation even if not neutral.

- Besides the problem with the bold code, which you can see for yourself, "sessão" is a typo - the translator meant "seção". In Standard Portuguese, the spelling would be "secção", but with the Brazil version taking precedence, "seção" is the correct word.
- "inclui" (includes) is a better translation than "possui" (owns).
- "a" is a typo.

- "Envio" used to refer to submissions in this context sounds so wrong. I had thought the same up above on the resources section when it is talked about "Envie seus contos", which means "send your stories", but I guess that used as a verb over there it was acceptable. As a noun to the refer to literary submissions, I just can't wrap my mind around it. And I browse Brazilian sites and see the expressions "Submissões" and "Submissões Online" all the time, refering to the same things as Lit does, so I can see no reason for it to be translated as "Envio".

- "Como" is too ambiguous. It means "How" (without the To), and also "As" and "I eat". I think the synonym Tutoriais (Tutorials, a synonym of How To's) would be a better translation.

Hey, Manu!

I finally finished going through every last word at Lit translated into Portuguese, I think, and unfortunately I have to change what I said on my first post here.

The first glance at the Story Index page was not bad, that much is true, but if I found some pretty bad mistakes when reading it more closely, as I said on my second post, some of the things I found on other pages are truly atrocious.

Your translator had a tendency to translate everything quite literally, word by word, including structure. This resulted often in very awkward phrases, and several times in completely meaningless ones. The taglines for the Mature and Transsexuals & Crossdressers categories, that I had mentioned before, are only two examples of this: translated word by word in the same order, resulting in complete gibberish.

There's the ubiquitous and so, so wrong "Envios" ("Sendings") used as a translation for "Submissions", "Revisões" (Revisions") for "Reviews", "Casais" ("Couples") for "Couplings", "Jogos" (Games) for "Toys" in all the adult shop links, etc. etc.

In the story search page, there's this jewel: "Contos de Encontros" (literally "Stories about Encounters") used to translate "Story Dates" - as in the dates when the stories were posted. There are tons of examples of translations like this one - translations that would almost be correct if taken out of context, but to think that someone would translate it this way in context is mind-boggling. This particular one isn't correct even out of context, mind you. Structure in Portuguese is reversed, so it would have to be something akin to "Story Encounters" for it to even make sense.

There's "Entre Com" ("Get Inside With") for "Enter" used every time there is data to be entered in a form field, and my personal favourite: "escutar a uma gravação dos personagens" as a translation of "listen to a recording of the characters", in reference to the security codes in forms. "Escutar" already means "Listen to", so "Escutar a uma" - there's that tendency to translate word by word without consideration for structure - can only mean "Listen to to". That's minor, though. The real kicker is "Personagens", which indeed means characters. Story characters. Persons. "Listen to to a recording of the persons."

In the Terms Of Service page, which is of importance for Lit even legally, among several run-of-the-mill mistranslations, there's this one: "nós respeitamos os direitos de cópia" ("we respect the right of copying") for "we respect copyrights". That's the exact opposite!

The list goes on. In general, there's also an over-abundance of you's and a shortage of articles inherited from the English translation, which results from the direct word-by-word approach, and a lot of inconsistency: I found at least 3 or 4 different translations for "Bulletin Board", for example.

Anyway, while I was checking these pages, I thought it would be better to make my corrections as I went along, so I saved each page in HTML and wrote in my version directly. I'm put them in a new post.

I think that's everything that is currently translated. I respected the principle of giving precedence to the Brazilian Portuguese version whenever there was conflict, but greatly reduced the number of times when that conflict occurred simply by rephrasing or stepping away from the absolutely literal translation of the English original.

As you can see, there is way too much stuff for me to have included an explanation of why I made each change, but I think everyone will agree it is an overall incomparably better translation. If you or the person doing the translation do need that explanation or discuss any particular bit, let me know, OK?

I really hope this helps improving Portuguese Literotica.

The corrections made do eliminate the mistranslations.

I don't think there is much more to do in the translation (if anything). The typos and other errors are gone and the work presented shows great care in form and language use.

But I hope the "final version" remains somewhat open for fine tunning in the future.

If you're talking about having the forums in Portuguese as well, I think it's part of Manu and Laurel's plans!

Of course that we're still patiently waiting for the main site translation to be corrected, so God knows how long that could take.
