It might be nice to enable a check box so that you're given an email when an Editor approves (or not) your story submission. I think emails are a good way to lure people back to the site.

A similar trick might be to allow people to subscribe to a story so that they're emailed whenever it's updated. Just like with the forum threads.

but is it possible for the moderators to perhaps add in a post or two to tell us about their difficulties in implementing certain changes? or even why things are the way they are...

i mean we can keep asking the world of them but if it's not even feasible in the first place....well you catch my drift
