Jenny finished up some last chores in her garden...the late afternoon sun lighting the treetops. The lady had been the matriarch of the farmstead since her late husband had gone off on a trading caravan two years ago. The caravan had never been seen again...
Now it was just her, her sister, and her daughter to run the farm. It was hard work...hard for men, doubly hard for women. But they had managed to make a go of it. The harvest looked to be good. She still wept for her husband from time to time, but life went on. It was a hard thing to say, but it was true. Life did go on. If it weren't for the raids...
It was something the village didn't speak often of...the knocks on doors late at night, the waiting orcs, or gnolls...or worse. The demands for food...livestock...or, increasingly, the "loan" of a female for the night. The fires at farms where such demands were refused. No one in the outskirts went out after sundown anymore. Doors were bolted. No one said anything about it. It was unspoken...
It was sundown now. Jenny had a few more plants to tend to, brushing her long blonde hair out of her eyes, dressed in her simple peasant's shift.
