Over the years(long time Lit member), I've often used real acquaintances as the model for my mainly female characters. For me that worked well with describing their attributes, physical description, etc. At times I've even used some personal encounters in scenes, with alterations. Some knew(several) this and approved, a relative few were not aware. For me this worked well, as my interest in writing about them was fairly high. This started to change back in the first year of the pandemic when my very first female 'model' character passed away from natural causes. She appeared in more than one story, and I appeared in one of hers, both anonymously. I almost lost a 2nd character that same year(Covid), and her ensuing health has really diminished in the following years.
A year later, another favorite of mine had a TBI, and we almost lost her as well. She's had a long recovery, and never fully regained her health, and has moved to Florida. My problem is it has made me feel guilty that through some strange life force, I have been affecting their lives. At a little over a year ago, a close friend of my wife, was diagnosed with Pancr/Liver cancer, and we've now lost her as well. Until now, she hasn't appeared in any stories, but has been in two of my unfinished stories, and I probably won't ever finish those either.
I know at our ages, health problems seem to drop out of the sky like clockwork; my wife and I have encountered that as well. I know I need to develop totally fictitious story characters, but that hasn't been something I've been able to do well. Then a few weeks ago, one of my younger, healthier 'model' characters told me she's going in for a biopsy, again, something wrong with her liver. Since then she's stop communicating, her FB page hasn't been touched in weeks. She's not in any finished stories, but again is in two of my in-process ones. It feels like I'm jinxing their lives by using them as models.
When I've tried developing and using totally fictitious characters, my interest wanes considerably. Not sure how to resurrect that.
