The US has become a second world shithole. I don't know that we will become third world per se but its definitely not the free, first world place many people still perceive it as despite the reality staring them in the face.
That's why "conservatives" who continue to evoke American pride and American patriotism are several steps behind those orchestrating the decline. Pride in the old America, up to about the turn of the New Millennium, and most of its history is fine (not ALL of its history but most, NO country has a "morally pure" history even the US despite having been better than almost any other).
Trying to constantly evoke "patriotism" for a society that has already basically been destroyed by the very people you are opposing is obviously going to be a losing strategy even if its more socially acceptable than addressing the real issues.
