It is a little acknowledged fact that most of us like music that is, shall we say, bywater and not mainstream. Can you let us all know your greatest "undiscovered" musical influences?

I'll start. Prize of multiple kisses to the most obscure (Jude - fuck off)

1. Alex Harvey

2. John Martin

3. Eddie Cochran

4. John Ottway and Wild Willy Barrat

Lets be hearing from you all - anything goes!

Petey Wheatstraw ("The Devil's Son-in Law")

Arthur Brown, the crazy English singer who used to swing onto stange with his hair on fire, who had like a three and a half octave vocal range and used it all.

Rufus Thomas and the Stax-Volt rhythm section.

The Shaggs

King Sunny Ade

---Zoot

I was in my glory to hear and see the Waterboys on VH1 classics singing Whole of the Moon.

the whole of the moon

Have u listened to Del amitri?

Like the Waterboys, Love Del Amitri:)

dr_mabeuse - Arthur Brown was a god (but he only set his hair on fire by accident)

Commander Cody & the lost planet Airmen.

Skeleton Crew: A college band that I loved but who never got the big break blind melon did.

Alpha Zaz: another college band who's only popular original song had the lyrics one by me :)

No, I'll have to check it out, thanks.

A certain writer here that makes some really great music!

I'd reveal their name, but then they'd be *gasp* DISCOVERED!!

Other than that, I like Loreena McKennitt who's still sorta unknown in the grand scheme. Celtic style and yummy voice.

Richard Thompson

Iggy Pop

Jackie Wilson

Psychedelic Furs

Muddy Waters

Colly! I dated one of them, don't remember his name, haha. Haven't thought of that band in decades. Yow!

Yea, Jackie Wilson! Saw him in person when I was a teen.

Well if you're into the Pop scene she's probably not your cup of tea. I love all kinds of music and had a friend that used to play in a hard rock band years ago. They called themselves Infra Red and even made a c.d. I still have it and will probably dust it off here soon, but they were good. I listen to a lot of obscure music. :D

Swear to God, the greatest unappreciated group is:

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils

In order to please the record company, they released one pop song called "Jackie Blue" that scored well on the charts. But once one gets beyond that pap, the real Daredevils are an indescribable fusion of hillbilly and rock music.

I started listening to them in 1975 and have been a loyal fan ever since.

Billboard Magazine called them: The Eagles if they were bought by Jed Clampett

Check out their recently released greatest hits album called Time Warp. You'll find a dozen songs on there that will instantly climb high on your personal list of favorites.

I kid you not.

By the way, if you can, listen to the song Chicken Train in a somewhat altered state, if you know what I mean.

Wow, you have good taste. Three of the guys on this list basically invented rock & roll--one of whom has a little band called The Rolling Stones named after one of his songs. In addition to those dudes, I loved Roxie music and The Psychedelic furs when I was in high school. And, as coincindence would have it, I once participated in the booing off the stage of Iggy Pop in his home town.

Fats Domino? Unsung? I don't think so. He was (and remains) a god!

Edith Piaf? Rock and Roll? A bit of a stretch. And by the way, at the top of the heap of divas in France, so not unsung either. (I have two of her albums. Just wish I understood French. As Steve Martin said, 'Those French have a different word for everything!')

Sam Cooke? Unsung? Geez, just because you are young and I'm old, doesn't make him an unsung hero. He was a star right up to the point where he got his balls shot off.

I think Phil Ochs was pretty well sung too, for essentially a folk singer.

I thought Sam Cooke was a female(?)

I downloaded one of (her) songs by mistake, and it was definitely a female singer.

Maybe there were two of them...

I'm trying to remember what song it was...

To Sir With Love?

Anyone know? I've deleted it. I was looking for the disco version and got her instead.
