Unrealistic, or a typo?

The quote is from an unsolicited E-mail I got from a an erotica site.

I have to wonder if this is a typo, because a common short story cahllenge in creative writng classes is to write a short story of less than 300 words. It is a very difficult challenge.

Erotic Stories.com, where the word counts are posted in the story headers, seem to have mostly stories in the 1200-1500 word range. Many of those 1200 word stories are not in any danger of winning an award for outstanding literature. They are mostly what I refer to as pornographic vignettes with no plot but lots of sex.

I know I am not capable of writing a "story" that's only a hundred words. Hell, I can't even post a message that is under a hundred words.

Does anyone think this is a realistic request for story length? Could you write a "story" (as opposed to a description of a sex act) in less than 100 words?

I read some of the stories on that site, and, uh, I don't think a story under 100 words is going to be very interesting. At least none of the stories there were especially interesting. Not enough there.

They pay a buck for stories. Now, what exactly is the point of that? They mail you a check, that's 34 cents. And they have to generate the check. And you have to deposit it. Much more work than it's worth. And then if you're really anal you have to get a W-2 for taxes..."Yes, Mr. IRS Agent, I earned seven dollars last year writing erotic stories. I guess I forgot to declare it, ha ha."

I supposed that I was not alone in receiving the offer. I'd guess they searched various sites and gathered e-mail addresses of poeple who write erotica.

I'm not surprised the stories there aren't "especially interesting" because 100 words just isn't enough to describe anything well, let alone tell a story.

I never claimed it wasn't possible to write a good story in 88 words (according to Word's word count function.) It's just very difficult. I very much doubt that the site is getting that kind of quality. <G>

Yeah, I know what you mean, but I always loved that little story, so I thought I'd share. I don't think I could write a story under 100 words, and have it be erotic? HUH? In my opinion, erotica comes from the details. I've written more than a 100 words descriping how the guy took off her stockings and kissed her thighs...
