"Day 1"

Derek Dent was biking home from work, just passing by the Kiddie Amusement Park that occurred this time of the year in Central Park's Wollman Ice Rink, when a powerful flash of light turned night into day...

He came to, laying on his back deep inside a thick shrub at the side of the bike trail (GSV). He was disoriented, unable to see anything but blackness. He sat up and struggled out of the bush to find his bike all bent up against the stone steps of the stair way into which he'd apparently crashed.

If that wasn't strange enough...

The Park and even the City beyond it was pitch black. Pitch black! Not a light to be seen in any direction, including emergency lights, battery back ups, taxi headlights ... nothing!

But that was only the start of the weird.

As he brushed the leaves and dirt from him, Derek heard quickly approaching footsteps. He looked up to see a gently sobbing man limped up the bike path directly toward past. A moment later, a second man -- moving incredibly fast -- lunged from out of the dark at the man, taking him to the ground and ... and biting into his neck!

Derek's mouth fell open as even under the low illumination of the stars he saw blood spurting from the now-shrieking man's neck. He thought he should intervene -- do something! -- when two huge dogs appeared just as quickly as the crazed man had and attacked the attacker!

Derek backed slowly into the shadows, crouching and cowering up against the steps as he watched the dogs -- as large as or even larger than wolves -- rip both men into pieces.

And then, just as suddenly as it had started, it ended, with a distant scream attracting and luring the huge beasts away.

Derek slumped to the ground, wondering what the hell was happening. Was it all a dream? A horrible nightmare? Maybe he was dead and in hell.
