Unpleasant characters

Well, I haven't read the story so I'm not certain, but judging just from this that doesn't sound like an unpleasant character. It's just unpleasant subject matter.

I don't really find that unpleasant people are unpleasant because of trouble in their past. Sometimes, certainly, but more often unpleasant people are unpleasant just because that's how they're wired: selfish people, greedy people, manipulative or thoughtless people usually aren't troubled rape victims looking for an outlet. Sometimes they're just assholes.

She's violent and self-destructive. She's given to sudden rages. There's more in a long version of her that I haven't posted here. But I should say that when I talk about unpleasant characters, I'm not just talking about villains, but about people who are hard to be with--they rub you the wrong way, or you have to be on guard when you're with because you're not sure what they're going to do or say. My question for my whore was: could she become a romance heroine? My question for Pipit is: can my readers (if there are any left by the end) be reconciled to her?

Well, a wise man once said that badguys aren't born - they're made. If this statement is true, your asshole-hypothesis cannot hold....

Some personality disorders are largely affected by an imbalance in brain chemistry. I would think people could be born with asshole tendencies without being diagnosed as having a personality disorder. Recent studies on the brains of sociopaths have found abnormal brain function. (As we all know, sociopaths tend to be seen as assholes when they're acting out.) Another form of assholery often manifesting itself in the political arena can be traced to distinct differences between the brains of liberals and conservatives. Quote from the article linked below:

Researchers also noted that Democrats had larger anterior cingulate cortexes, which are associated with tolerance to uncertainty, while Republicans had larger right amygdalas, which are associated with sensitivity to fear.

Here's a Jimmy Buffett song that sums up the topic quite well.

Well I was drivin' down I-95 the other night,
somebody nearly cut me right off the road.
I decided it wasn't gonna do any good to get mad,
so I wrote a song about 'em instead. It goes like this.

Were you born an asshole?
Or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
'cause you're an asshole tonight.
Yes you're an A-S-S-H-O-L-E
and don't you try to blame it on me
You deserve all the credit.
You're an asshole tonight.
You were an asshole yesterday,
you're an asshole tonight.
And I got a feeling,
you'll be an asshole the rest of your life.

And I was talkin' to your mother
just the other night,
I told her I thought you're an asshole.
She said, "Yes, I think you're right."
And all your friends are assholes
'cause you've known them your whole life.
And somebody told me
you've got an asshole for a wife.

Were you born an asshole,
or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
'cause you're an asshole tonight!

In answer to your final questions, definitely both could happen. This is the test of your ability to craft the story so it leads that way. A whore thinks and wants romance like any other woman, just her circumstances don't allow it to happen. It would be her triumph to have sex with an emotional connection and enjoy sharing feelings for someone, allowing a romance to start.
Pipit can always have a pivotal moment, or redeeming action that allows readers to take to her again. All about second chances and second impressions, 'cuz the first ones don't count, lol.:D

I wonder how they collected the samples...

"Hi. I'm gonna kill you and cut open your brain for research. But first, would you be so kind as to tell me how you voted at the last election?"

To judge from my lurking on the General Board, both liberals and conservatives often fuck their brains out (see your own conribution to the MYTH thread), and that makes generous samples of brain tissue available to scientific research.

The anti hero is very popular these days so why not an anti heroine?

I have written several stories with a female protagonist who is quintessentially unpleasant. Her morality is ambiguous at best, she smokes like a chimney and is the lesbian equivalent of Lothario (okay that might not be such a bad quality after all :p). Moreover, she does things which are despicable and makes sure she knows how bad they are. Yet, the reader is supposed to feel sorry for her and her choices.

Here's one of her stories. Let me know if you find her "unpleasantness" to your liking.

Thanks, LaRascasse: she sounds like a character I can love. I've got quite a reading list now, and I'm looking forward to going through it all.
