......cheating. Could be an alternate universe or perhaps a future one where an "ex" exception or clause is understood to be kosher within the boundaries of marriage.

Any thoughts on this? Perhaps it is simply regarded as "romantic" enough to qualify for a sentimental exemption from the wedding vows.

Another wild idea that I had was where people are assigned to a public pillory and are required to have sex with anyone who wants them while consigned there.....perhaps in a world where the Puritan rule lasted in New England, but became less puritanical over time.

A whole universe, I think no, it's fun to think about, but not much a story, it's just the norm there, so, nothing new. But, it could be a family or community in our world that just holds this belief privately, and then someone outsider is exposed to that, matter-of-factly.

Or, one story, slightly modified from my own experience, a variety of running bride.

She's very young and was a virgin, and after two years of very deep relationship she's not ready to go live with him and his family. John's older and experienced but not interested nor able to create independent household for her, not yet at least.

And, there that friend with really big dick he shamelessly promotes, and aggressive interest in her. And John basically say, "go have fun if that's what you want, you will probably regret, but I can't and wouldn't stop you." What he didn't expect is, she without hesitation moves in with the bigdick. Who's drinking too much and beating her, so mere three months later she runs from there, but neither home nor to John (as he hoped), but to another guy entirely. And few months later, switch to yet another, without any warning, once again leaving most of her little belongings behind. And so on, for half a decade, including a lesbian affair, among others.

The catch, all that time she stay on 'best friends with benefits' status with John , who honestly believe she will someday return to him, as they have sex every few months, regardless with whom she's living in at the moment, and he has to hear her rants about her current even. She's not terribly good at hiding that from her current either, sometimes even openly declare that John has every right on her as her first.

Like temple whores in India?
I may be a bit delusional on this (it's long time, have spent several last lives in North Europe), but there was that religious practice where prominent enough families sent young, chosen daughters to live in the temple for a set service time, where they were basically whores, but framed in religious rituals. After they returned to the family to become respectful wifes. Well, generally in arranged marriages, but that's standard anyway.

I can see possibilities in both stories depending on the direction it goes. Mind you these are all from the female perspective since that's what I prefer.

1 - Is it consensual that the person can simply go back to their ex and do what they want? Or is it more of a power situation where once the people have had sex they're no longer able to refuse?

2 - Is being in the pillory a punishment, a reward, or a lottery? What's the purpose of having someone available for public sex?
