SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- United Airlines, operated by UAL Corp.
2:54pm 04/15/2009

UAUA 6.40, +0.35, +5.8%), said Wednesday on its Web site that it will join other airlines and begin charging very obese passengers for a second seat. Under the new guidelines, passengers who are unable to fit into a single seat in the ticketed cabin; unable to properly buckle the seatbelt using a single seat-belt extender; or unable to put the seat's armrests down when seated will have to buy a second ticket. The guidelines apply to tickets purchased on or after March 4 for travel on or after April 15.

Obese people make up the majority of the country.

What they need to do is boycott United, which, being an airline company, cannot possibly be in good financial health as it is.

Alienating your customers, especially a class as prodigious as the obese (very obese or otherwise), is not a wise move in this economy.

If I pay for two seat they damn well are not going to sick someone else in the seat beside me.

if they use two seats then they use two seats.
if they aren't charged for the extra seat then either the person beside them has to suffer being crushed {unfair when they paid for a whole seat}, or the cost of the extra seat gets spread around all the other customers and pushes up ticket prices.

Overdue. I've had some very long flights made miserably by morbidly obese people squeezing into seats, and they're just not designed for that.

You have to be huge - fucking huge - to not be able to buckle your seat belt with an extender.

True, and obese people usually smell because they sweat a lot. When I see an obese person walking toward my seat, I close my eyes and pray they don't sit next to me (but I'm usually praying that nobody sits next to me).

everyone smells to me.
*people hater*
i don't care how they look as long as they aren't touching me.
this is my space and that is your space.

perhaps they should make more realistic sized seats though, seeing as most people are overweight. they cram us in so tight that it's not comfy even if you are skinny.

In case you hadn't noticed, they cram people into everything, planes, stadiums, concert halls....

take a shorter flight...

If I ever get so big I need two seats I"m just gonna fly first class. Those seats are ROOMY!

I'm way too tall for coach class seats at 5'11.5". No fucking leg room. Not even close. It's worse than driving a Nissan Xterra. I'd hate to see what it's like for guys over 6 feet.

i'm only 5'6'' and there's not enough leg room.
we need some expensive dvt cases to change this.

If airlines used realistic sized seats, they would have to give up the number of passengers, which in turn makes flying more expensive.

Myself, I'd rather pay a little more for a normal sized seat. At 5'10, I have to stretch my legs under the seat in front of me, which gets real uncomfortable real fast. If I'm lucky and there's an empty seat next to me, I kind of turn my body that way so I have a little more leg room.

I don't mind sitting next to chubby people. Their soft, cushy shoulders come in handy when it's time to nap. :)

I wonder...

If they are going to retro-act that in the other diirection.

I am not manically obese , but I am a big guy.

6ft 3 inch...long legs , broad shoulders , built to play rugby .
Almost every flight I have ever been on , except HM airlines ,
has been cramped fucking agony ...
Are airlines going to compensate me because they all used seats designed for frickin midgets, with 18" legs......or vertically challenged types ... for the terminologically offended...
Even on some long hauls it can be painful when the bugger in front moves.

It isn't just the fat ones that can be annoying. I have sat next to some skinnies that seemed to have the metabollism and concentration of rabid bloody hamsters on speed ....They couldn't sit still , gabbled inanely to the point of being asked to choose life and shut the fuck up...
A long flight next to one of the ' I am just such a livewire , can't sit still for ten seconds'... is a short step away from a crime being committed...
Some little skinny bastards should get plastic wheels not seats...

I use that site all the time! Very helpful. Doesn't make standard coach seats any bigger or more comfy though.

I'm only 5'7" and I hate coach seats, no leg room at all. I'll pay extra for an exit row seat if I can. Or I'll upgrade to business on AirTran as it is cheap to do (and you get seats as good as first class.)

Book a second seat, load it up with your luggage, and don't check anything.
