Woke this morning to discover I'd been the victim of a uni-bomber. My poor struggling stories had all been attacked.

I don't know what attracted the attention of this troll, because they weren't particularly well rated to begin with.

I'm going to go lick my wounds. (Ummmm, lick -- maybe I can turn this day around.)

If you need a hand licking wounds, let me know :)

All your stories?

PM Laurel. She'll remove the bombs. Expect to lose a few legit votes at the same time.

Sorry, maybe it's a fair system, I'm just sour still from going from #1 to #55 after my 'bomb' was removed. I lost so many legit votes along with it... I'm still hurting.

I also lost 16 and yes, 16 votes to a bomber once. I even had my own whinge thread over that one!!!!!

From what I can tell, yes -- ALL my stories. (There are just 12.)

I can almost understand a categorical bomb (since I've been advised that there's not enough wank-ability in my work), but my stuff spans 6 categories.

Anyway, I'll give the PM a shot. Thanks.

When you see something like this happen, impressive, all you have to do is this:

At the bottom of just one of your stories that has been bombed, click on the link for "report this story." On the page that opens, there are a list of reasons for reporting the story, choose "other" and in the box for specifying the reason, type in that you would like them to check the voting on all your stories because they have all received 1 votes within (whatever) time.

I've been through this a couple of times and this is what Laurel has told me to do. Everytime I've asked her for help, she's cleared them up for me. She told me it was much easier for her if they are reported this way, rather than in a PM, because it gives her a direct link to one of your stories, and from there she can jump to the others.

It's not necessarily your stories. I had an incident a month or so ago where someone didn't like my opinions on the board so he bombed every single story within about 10 minutes time.

I can sympathize. :rose:

It's hardly worth the effort, Impressive.

After a few licks tolyk gets a stiff neck.

Is that the only thing that gets stiff?

:p

This immature vandalism is getting ridiculous. I would suggest that only members be allowed to vote. However, with such a small percentage of readers voting, there might not be any votes at all.

It's about 99.9% certain that this idiot who bombed Imp's stories will have been a member nushu... Random visitors don't have the inclination to do such things... most wouldn't understand the voting system enough to think it made a difference.

This is one of our resident malicious idiots who get some twisted pleasure ruining works they aren't capable of producing themselves... Often a second rate author who can't make the top list without attacking everyone else... or as in cloudy's case some weak willed brain dead moron who can't stand to lose an argument will attack.

I lost faith in Laurel's claim to fairness ages ago when she removed what she deemed to be overly generous 5 votes from a story of mine but left in obviously malicious 1 votes.

I was also one bombed on every one of my stories, back in May, that was my first entry to AH, I did a thread on it.

I contacted Laurel in the recommended manner, as described by Cloudy above, reported what had happened, said I could even provide the figues to prove (I keep a chart), but nothing was ever done.

4 of my stories lost their 'h' rating, and the 4 left, dropped around 250 places in the lists. They've never recovered.

A couple of times the occasional score has been removed, from one or two stories, but the systematic bombing was never sorted.

Thanks, all, for the tips & such. I like pop's take -- it's jealousy in action! Makes me feel better.

Not sure I agree about the bomber being a member -- or logged in, at any rate -- as that sort of behavior could be tracked. Could it not?

Regardless, I'll follow through as advised.

Mat -- your new AV is hot!

Wow!

Yesterday morning, I created a spreadsheet with stories, votes, and views. Should have done it a long time ago, I guess, but I never anticipated needing documentation of that sort.

Anyway, I was gone from early morning until about midnight yesterday, and I was planning to "report" the uni-bombing first thing this morning per cloudy's instructions. When I checked this morning, those votes were gone! :D In some cases two votes were removed, but in all cases, ratings improved.

I don't know if this was caught by some routine scan, or if some anonymous AH darling reported it for me. (If so, MANY THANKS!)

Amazing how such a trivial thing (in the grand scheme of things) can really make or break your day.

I now have to happilyretract this post.

The very next day, I logged in to my submissions page to discover.........

.........all the 1-bombs had been removed, my averages, ratings in the lists, and the lost 'H' ratings returned.

Thank you Laurel. You have restored my faith in the system.

I've seen this time and time again. It really annoys me especialy when it's the new writers that get bombed since they haven't recieved a large enough following or become well known through the forums to get enough real votes to keep them safely up at a respectable average vote.

I don't have much confidence in Laurel's abilty to clean up the 1 bombers. Sometimes she catches them but usually not. Last time I saw it was mismused story get hit, her lesbian story was on the top 5 of the lesbian top list and I thought it was safe since it was no longer listed as new story so it wasn't going to get many more views after. But then a few days later I noticed that it plunged dramaticly on the list. Obviously someone was checking the top list and slaming the stories down with 1 or 2 votes.

I had my own moments with the one bombers and know how discouraging it can feel. One moment you think that you created something that someone read and actualy liked and the next thing you see is the votes coming in plunging your story down in vote scores. That can really demoralize a writer along with cruel feedback that only insults the writer rather then help them improve. Especialy if a writer has not written many stories and built a thick skin, it can dissuade someone from trying to write ever again even if they have real talent or great potential.

LOL - That would be me. I was completely oblivious to the forums until just recently. Don't know why I never noticed the link. So, even though I've been writing for Lit for about a year now, I'm still a "newbie" here.

If that's the way the Top Lists are targeted, I'm not sure I want to be there. The feedback means more to me.

I agree with whoever said earlier -- on some thread -- that feedback frequency dropped when public comments were introduced. That is unfortunate, IMO.
