Ashley sat in the rental car going over her checklist one last time before hitting the road. “Ready,” she thought to herself as she started the car. As power ignited the electronics of the small compact car, the radio blared out Slipknot’s, Duality.
“This will not do!” she said and reached for the scan button.
The very first stop the scan made was a local country station, playing a half over Chris Stapleton’s, Tennessee Whiskey. Country music really wasn’t Ashley’s goto but she hit the select button and put the car in drive.
Not even out of the parking lot, Ashley’s phone rang. Moving over to a parking space, she parked the car, turned down the radio and answered the call.
“Hello, Mr. Philips. Yes…. I have all the papers and am just now leaving. Yes, I should make it by late evening. I’ll drive safely, promise. See you in a few hours.” she said in her most professional voice.
Turning the radio back up, to her surprise was the first notes of an unforgettable song, Sam Hunt’s, Body Like A Back Road. Her mind rushed to that night. To the night she met, Dirk.

“This has to be the worst rain I’ve seen in my life!” Ashley mumbled to herself as she fought to see the Interstate 20 sign coming into view between the high speed wipers. “Big Spring, Texas, ten miles ahead,'' it said.
Seemingly what took hours to reach, finally there were the glowing lights of the TA travel plaza. After taking the exit, Ashley pulled into the parking lot to figure out her next move. With a quick search, the Marriott was right up the road and Ashley couldn’t think of a better place to wait out the storm. Arizona would have to wait a bit longer.
With the rain letting up a tad, Ashley quickly parked the car and grabbed her things and ran into the lobby. Looking like a contestant in a wet T-shirt contest, Ashley checked in as fast as she could. Before leaving the front desk, she asked the clerk if they had a restaurant.
“No, sorry, we don’t but the bar offers a few small bits.” he said with a finger pointing towards the bar and his eyes fixed on the outline of her lace bra showing through her soaked Tee.
Making it to her room, stripping off her wet clothes and putting on that fluffy white robe that hung on the bathroom door, she called Jenniffer to let her know she wouldn’t make it there as planned. After the call ended, Ashley took out a matching set of dry panties and bra, a pair of jeans and a tee from her bag, slipped into them and put on a pair of sandals. Taking her overnight bag into the bathroom, she gazed at herself in the mirror.
“Still look like a mess!’’, she thought, wrapping her long damp strawberry blonde hair in a messy bun. Ashley finished her makeup by placing mascara on the lashes of her seductive green eyes and ended with a dab of perfume behind each ear. “I hope the food is good!” she thought as the door to her room closed behind her.
Entering the bar, Ashley felt a little uneasy, seeing that most were men. Taking a deep breath, she made her way to the bar and took a chair. The barback was a friendly, cute, petite woman, who said her name was Sally.
After getting a glass of water and placing her order, Ashley began to relax. Looking around the small dim lit bar, Ashley saw there were all walks of life in the bar. Business suits, casual, cowboy hats, even a few in jogging pants.
Giggling just a little from the guys in jogging pants boasting about something, one took a few steps back and there….., there he was, this strawberry blonde haired, buff, tanned, gorgeous man.
Dirk.
