So I am new here, and just posted my first stories. One of my stories, "Nice Ass", is about 72 hours old at this time. Now, in the statistics, according to the help FAQ, the little histogram is the number of times a story has been viewed. My story has 7k views. Is that seven thousand views? In 72 hours?

How much of that is real people and how much of that is netbots scraping the internet? Did they actually read the story, or just show the text on the screen and then click away?

Yes, 7k is 7000 views. You can actually hover over that and it will show the full count down to the single digit. ( or tap/hold or whatever applies to your device )

It only means it's been opened. You don't know whether they've read one word or the whole thing. And yes, some of them are bots. The site filters a fairly large number of bots and spiders from the number, but there's a nearly infinite number of them crawling around, so it's inevitable that some end up in the number. No exclusion list is absolute.

Using a comparison between the same stories releasing here and another site that only records hits when opened by a logged-in member, it's most likely somewhere around 20% bots — give or take 5-10% depending upon category/time of year/etc.

When comparing your stats to those of others, only compare within the same category. The size and engagement of the readership varies widely from category to category. 7k in 72 hours would be absolutely astounding in some categories. In others you can get 7k views in an hour. The same applies to every other stat. And it's imperfect at best even within the same category. You have to account for whether the other author has a huge following, whether they got top billing on the new list or maybe stayed there for a couple of days, whether they got an early H, so on and so forth. A lot that has nothing to do with the quality/enjoyment factor of the story can influence the numbers.

( Including trolls who blast the score with low votes for reasons innumerable. )

Not 100% sure what you are refering to, but this might help:

Published = date last published on site (changes if an update made)
Hot = at least 10 ratings with average rating >4.5
Star = average raing / number of ratings
Heart = number of times added to Favourites list
Graph = number of views ('000)
Speech bubble = number of comments
Stack of paper = part of a series

It appears the statistics on the story itself do not update or match the statistics in the story list/menu. Is there a delay between the two databases? I tried refreshing my browser.

What's listed on your author control panel ( https://www.literotica.com/my/#/works/stories/published ) is always the most up to date. Absolutely everywhere else you can see statistics has a larger delay. ( as much as 24 hours for toplists, for example )

For the most part, your scores, number of votes, favorites, and list numbers are real time. Views only update every 15 minutes. Comments are a bit wonky because of the comment queue that's trying to eliminate spam that was popping up on comments. It won't increment your number or announce the new comment until its cleared the queue. Even then, it may be a while before you can actually view the comment either on the story or via your control panel.

I'll cover something that might just come up. If you ever see your number of votes go DOWN, that's because there's something called sweeps that eliminates fraudulent votes. Most of the time, that's going to benefit you, because the people casting fraudulent votes are trolls who score low. If you happen to have some overzealous fans who are multi-voting 5s on your stories or 1-bombing other people, it could be to the detriment of your score. ( their fives going away )

Also, sweeps and the ability of readers to change the value of their votes means that your score can change without the vote number changing. You could get a new vote and have one swept since the last time you looked, resulting in the same number of votes but a different score. Or a reader could change their mind and modify their previous score.

They're never in synch. The site updates data with a number of different cycles, all of which lag your master list.
