Under rated stories

I've read stories here that I thought were over-rated and some that were under-rated. I understand that not everyone has the same taste and I'm sure that some only read in or write to a certain genre. I'm curious as to how many have read a certain story that they thought was under-rated. I don't really care about those you think are over-rated. If someone got a high rating for their effort more power to them. If you have a story, not one of you own, and think it's under-rated please list it...this is curiosity nothing more.

At the risk of sounding like a snob, I have to say that the story ratings seem to have no correlation whatsoever with my taste. I usually make my mind up based on the first paragraph, sometimes before that.

But I just put that lack of correlation down to my taste being atypical of the majority of readers here -- so maybe it's me that's doing the under- or overrating.

Definitely. I would not go so far as to say that story scores have "no correlation" with quality. I don't believe that. If I read 20 stories at random with a 4.8 score there is a high probability I will enjoy them, on average, more than 20 stories picked at random with a 4.3 score. At a minimum, it's likely that the grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and basic elements of story-telling, are better, and those things matter to me regardless of subject matter.

That said, I often disagree with ratings. There are good stories I enjoy that don't neatly fit into a category, and sometimes their score gets lowered as a result, even though I enjoy them.

I'm not quite sure how to define "under-rated". The stories below all have at least a 4 rating and a couple even have Hs. Still, their scores are lower than I think they ought to be. I consider each of these to be better than anything I've written, so I'll throw a little attention their way.

  • The Third Ring by NotWise. It's pretty thin on erotica, so I understand why it's score isn't higher, but it's a wonderfully told story.
  • The His Fantasy Series by ellen_devlin. I like 'em short and hot and these one-pagers deliver. I can see how they might leave some readers wanting more.
  • Why Not, or, Your Problem by JerseyGirlDownUnder. Vivid and evocative in a very poetic style.
  • A Slut's Triangle by Kantarii. Eye-opening. It's an accessible entrance into a category that probably steps outside of a lot of reader's comfort zones.
  • In the Morning by electricblue66. Another short-n-hot one-pager in that amazingly slow and relaxed style he has.

Everyone here knows if you write for loving wives and you don't do BTB story your story will be underrated by at least 33%.

One thing you can do is "favorite" stories you really like. This helps to highlight the story in two different ways. First, if somebody finds you interesting as an author they'll be interested to see the stories that you recommend. Second, the "similar stories" list at the end of each story is apparently made up from favorite lists. If you favorite stories X and Y, then there is a chance that they will show up on each other's "similar stories" list.

No correlation with my taste in terms of kinks I'd agree with. Without making a proper analysis, it seems to me incest, romance, and long sci-fi stories get high scores, neither of which I like to read. But I think there is a positive correlation in terms of quality of writing. Stories with decent grammar, plot and story arch get better scores than incoherent wank fests. Though that correlation is certainly not 1. Of my submissions, the LW stories are the only ones not reaching the red H, and while it's difficult to judge your own work, I think they are far better than many of my other stories.

There are plenty of good ones I've ran into, I'll go look for them and try and post them here.

<—— UNDERATED🌹but, that’s okay. I still have my fans. I put more value on the comments than the votes on my stories.

My reading is limited to a few genres and even within those certain types are more to my liking. Poor grammar can detract from an otherwise interesting story.

I hope this won't upset anyone if I say that: If you make up your mind based on the first paragraph, I think you're likely to miss some real gems

For example:
As far as being underrated goes, I stumbled upon a 'New' chapter of a series by Wkd_Macey, called Lust on the High Seas. Whereas the first couple of episodes are little more than setting the field (in a mildly complex way), this author seems to score consistently high - with the notable exception of 'Day5' which falls way below the average for the other offerings at only 4.11.

Strange, as I would suggest this chapter is easily as well written as any of the other work.

Yes, there is a correlation. I will occasionally find a story rated under four that I feel is under rated and some that are in the high fours that are over rated.

Thank you! I am exceedingly chuffed by your comments on my first ever story on Lit.

I agree there's a correlation, but there's also a lot of noise. Chapters in a series tend to get higher scores than stand-alone stories. Long stories tend to get higher scores than short stories. Some categories score much higher than others. I'm sure there are other influences on the score that really have nothing to do with the quality of the story.

I'll join Kantarii in thanking Loqui for including my story on his underrated list.

Good Tip...I saw you are located in Calandria and having never heard of it I looked it up... a nuclear reactor???

That's a really good point!

In a manner of speaking.

You have undoubtedly heard many things about Calandria. Some of them are true. It is true, for example, that as a general rule, Calandrians do not wear undergarments. . . . What is the point of wearing something that chafes and binds and that no one else can even see to admire?

On the other hand, many of the rumors are nothing but rubbish. For example, despite what you so often hear, it is almost always possible to walk more than two city blocks in Central City without having to step over a couple engaged in public fornication. Calandrians are affectionate, but they are also courteous and self effacing, and they would go out of their way rather than cause discomfort or scandal.

As to the question of whether Calandria is a land of vile sinfulness, a modern Sodom and Gomorrah, as so many would have it, or whether it is the last sweet remnant of the Garden of Eden--- that is a judgment you will have to make for yourself. I will simply tell you what I know to be true: the climate is salubrious, the people are gracious and kind, and the social mores, though very different from our own, are based on a long and stable tradition. Actually my internship there is done now, but I still look back on those days fondly. Thanks for asking.

Being “underrated” isn’t always a bad thing. As of late, I’ve had about a dozen or so people favorite the first chapters of most of my storylines. At some point, they will eventually read them. Hopefully, they will find the series worthy to read all the way through. I don’t think I write “boring” stories and most of the people who have commented on my stories/chapters even went on to send me an email as well.

Overall, I may not be a popular writer here on the site, submitting “trendy” or sought after stories, but I am content with what I have achieved and how far I have come as a writer.

Oh, yes. Oh very yes! So many good ideas have been sidetracked by that.

Equally, if the content and overall theme is spell-binding, I can overlook a hell of a lot, technically. I found a one-off story a while back that technically, grammatically, spelling, was an absolute train-wreck, but the content (it must have had huge elements of auto-biography through it) was visceral, fascinating. Just about every sentence had something "wrong" with it, but somehow that complete rawness worked. Half the time I couldn't even figure out what was going on, but the writing had such power. I've never read anything like it, not before, not since.
