I finally have enough points to have an avatar. I even have several picked out and ready to go. So I unchecked the box, and browsed but I keep getting an error message telling me that it is not a valid image file.

What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Thanks

Post your picture here and someone will check it out. What format is it?
GIF, JPG? I think it still has to be 150 x 150.

Do you have image editing software like Photoshop, PaintShopPro, GIMP or Irfanview? If so, what program(s)?

If you don't have software that can resize to 150 by 150 pixels as the largest dimensions and save the image to an accepted format like JPEG or GIF with the file size 15.0kb or smaller, then download one of the following FREE programs:
Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com (a relatively simple program that a lot of people find easy to use; I don't find it so intuitive)

The GIMP http://www.gimp.org (a powerful photoshop-like program; I find it easier for basic tasks than Irfanview, but that's just my opinion)

One of us will give you instructions on how to make it work from there, if you can figure out how to resize ('resample' in Irfanview) and save it correctly.

Yes, you could just post it on the thread MF linked to, but the benefit of going this way is you'll actually learn something and be able to make AV's to your heart's content without waiting in the future. Plus, you'll be able to contribute by helping others who have similar problems. :)

Thanks you too!

I've book marked the links for later use.

The problem was was that it was a bmp file. Something I never knew existed until now. Problem solved, and knowledge gained.

That AV was worth waiting for! Any more pics? Now you know how to format them. The onew in threads must be <800x600, 100K or smaller, I think.

I have paint shop

But paintshop seems to only let me take the TOP half of the pic. Anyway I can redirect/cut what 150 by 150 slice I want?????

I'm not exactly sure exactly what the problem is, but...

Paintshop is NOT the same thing as Paintshop Pro -- they're two entirely different programs from two entirely different companies.

However, even MSPaint, which comes with Windows and is the lowest common denominator has scroll bars on images that are bigger than the screen and will let you adjust the selection box after scrolling and/or automatically scroll if you drag the selection box off the edge of the screen.

Most programs also have a zoom out function that will let you zom out and do a rough crop to reduce the size of an image before doing a second cropping at 1:1 or higher zoom in magnification and amore sophisticated resize/resample function to bring the cropped image under 150x150 pixels.

I never use a program to edit pics, at least not yet.

I resize on the sites which pop up when I google "image resize". Amazing lil trick  You just enter the size and you are golden.

Is that how you got the blonde hair? ;)
