from the Associated Press:

Pope John Paul II said Thursday (Sept. 5) that men with "obvious signs of deviations" must be barred from becoming priests, alluding to the risk of further sex abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church....

....The Pope told visiting Brazilian bishops said it would be regrettable if "immature young men, or those with obvious signs of deviations, were ordained, which, as it is sadly known, can cause serious anomalies in the consciences of the faithful, producing clear damage to the whole Church."

umm.....DUHHHH!

but.....<sigh>.....at least he is finally talking about it....

Ginny, the Pope's saying homosexuals are the ones molesting children. Instead of concentrating on the real problem of pedophilia, he's looking for a scapegoat.

I have to agree with you on this one, Misch.

and further tarnishing his image when revisionist historians write about him. The very fact Law is still in Boston speaks volumes to the Pope's stance on the issue. I am not insinuating he supports the actions of a few, merely saying he appears as a ostrich up to his ears in the sand.

oh mischka, i clearly understand he's not addressing the issue as it should be addressed....as it should have been years and years ago.....admitting his force of priests includes pedophiles hiding behind their collars....and the church has been slow to do anything about it.....protecting themselves first......not the victims.....

south louisiana, which is probably 80% roman catholic, was where one of the first scandals of a large scale involving priests molesting children occured and was pursued relentlessly by the local media and the civil and criminal courts.....it's front page news here anytime there's a new incident reported or the Church makes a statement regarding their priests and sex abuse.....i've read books written by local journalists on the Gilbert Gauthe case....with curiosity and disgust, i follow the Church's constant denial that they are complacent in these widespread incidents......and i watch the steps they attempt to make, only to appease the public cry, with very lil sincerity.....i know it's PR........i know they've been forced to do what they have so far......and i know they admit very little.....and have wanted to lump the responsibility for the rampant perversion on the individual priests....not on the policies and procedures of the Church....."they've done no wrong...it's the priests who have sinned".......the Church's coverup in our local diocese of the Gauthe case is absolutely staggering....the levels of it....the "men of God" who silently nodded their approval of the silence.....

i was just laughing about the obsurdity of a man in his almighty position even having to make that statement, discuss such things....that the Roman Catholic Church.....with all of its power and money.....has to talk about their dirty laundry.....has to admit there is a problem....they are having to state the obvious....and sure...they're not saying all they need to....and prolly trying to steer it other directions....

but it is just totally....umm.....Duhhhhhh.....

i'm espiscopalian, btw.....

Kick ass. I don't think I've ever been quoted by every subsequent response to a thread. :D

Ginny, I see your point. I'm sure it's killing the Pope to even have to address the issue. It just sickens me that he's simply turning the focus on "deviants," which his church has persecuted all this time anyway. How terribly convenient for him.

In my opinion, the forced celibacy dogma embraced by the church is one of the central problems here. Attempts to completely subjugate basic needs like sexuality are doomed to fail miserably. When all forms of sexual expression (including sex between loving, consenting adults, and even masturbation) become equally taboo, it can create a breeding ground for true deviations such as pedophilia.

Oh shit, I forgot to quote Mischka. My bad. ;)

Scrape Goats? I think rather than scraping goats, Ginny and Tortoise should shave.

Sheesh.
