Soldier marries partner in first military wedding
Lance Corporal James Wharton tied the knot at Westminster Registry Office this weekend with 21-year-old flight attendant Thom McCaffrey.

Lance Corporal James Wharton tied the knot at Westminster Registry Office this weekend with 21-year-old flight attendant Thom McCaffrey.

James, 23, is the first officer in the Household Cavalry Regiment to have a gay wedding. He revealed that "the entire regiment was really supportive.

The couple, both from Wrexham in North Wales, shared their first dance together after the ceremony, to Tina Turner.

.......... In 1999, 298 people were discharged from the military on the count of their sexuality. The ban was lifted in January 2000 but beforehand, military officers would be interrogated and then expelled if found out.

Last July James made the front cover and talked about his sexuality to army publication 'Soldier Magazine' proudly wearing his Iraq medal and uniform, which he also wore at the wedding.

This wedding comes the same weekend as Europe Minister Christ Bryant marries his boyfriend in the Houses of Parliament.

Congratulations to all four of you. Wonderful, wonderful day.

Them's Real Soldiers....

Lance Corporal James Wharton serves with The Household Cavalry. They are made up of two Regiments, The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons). You see them in London looking like this....

When they get down to business, they look like this...

On Parade, they look rather ceremonial. Their real job, amongst others, is the protection of the Queen.

If you want to be dead before you hit the ground, wait until the Queen is going by on some official function and try messing with them. Like The Swiss Guards at the Vatican and the United States Secret Service, they take the job seriously.

Lance Corporal James Wharton is gay but don't think that makes him a woos. The Household Cavalry accepts gays. They don't accept a woos.

This sort of thing is sure to catch on with most Brit boys.

i'm offended.

as a former soldier - 22 years - i'm deeply distressed by this story.

i mean, a lance-corporal in the sgts' mess? outrageous!
