It is a shame you are located in the UK, as there is a dearth of articulate conversationalists here in America. The pace of life and what is presented as entertainment by our media seems to be what has rendered a large numbers of adults unable to speak or write a complete coherent sentence let alone engage in the fine art of good conversation. One overhears the cell phone callls of others as mostly glib and superficial bits of tripe; not entirely unlike any speech given by our present so called "leader".
Twice I have traveled to England and found a much high percentage of the population can and do converse intelligently and politely. I am especailly fond of the following reply
that I believe was given by a legislator in your house Of Lords, " Thank you sir, for proving to me that is there no such thing as unutterable nonsense. " Often I have said this to the rude person on the mobile phone behind me in the bank whom responds with a blank stare that indicates he or she is trying to deduce whether or not they have been insulted.
