Here's one I really don't understand. This came to me through Lesbian Appeal Personals (we can make fun of me and my online personals fetish later).

The following user has responded to the ad you posted at Lesbian Appeal

From: UDO DURU

Private Email: udo_duru@yahoo.co.uk

Hello,

I am UDO DURU, the first son of DR. JAGO DURU who was assassinated by
the rebel forces of Major Paul Koromah in Sierra Leone. Before my
father’s death, he was the Director of the Sierra Leone Gold and Diamond
Mining Corporation (G& DMC).

Two days before he was assassinated, he instructed and arranged for me
and my immediate brother to be moved from Sierra Leone to Cote
d’Ivoire, a neighboring country with some valuable documents covering a certain
deposit he made with one of the security company here in Abidjan,
involving a total sum of Ten million, five hundred thousand United States
Dollars (US$10,500,000).

I am contacting you to assist me to withdraw Trunk box of the money
from the security company here, for the purpose of investment in your
country. Besides, we will want to continue our education over there in your
country as soon as you withdraw the money from the security company.

Meanwhile, all the necessary documents backing this deposit is right
here with me in Abidjan The contact of the security company here will be
given to you as soon as you indicate your interest to assist us.

We have reached a consensus to compensate you with 15% of the total
amount and 5% has been set aside for any expenses you may incur during the
transaction. Please, all that we need from you is trust and fidelity as
the deposit remains secret, since me, my brother and yourself only
knows about such deposit by our late father.

Reply to my private email: udo_duru@yahoo.co.uk or call me on

Best regards,

Udo Duru.

It's spam...a scam...they are trying to get either:

A) money
B) your bank account information
C) your credit card information

from you. Don't answer it!

My dear Zeb...I know this. ;)

Let me clarify: I used to get this type of bullshit in my mailbox all the time. So when those threads on here went up with those other, similar letters, I almost wished I had my own to throw in.

Now? Wish granted.

*dazed* Huh? What? :D

Just to beat it into the ground, the letter is a VERY well known scam, usually run out of Nigeria. All they want is for you to indicate your interest in helping them. If you will front a fee [maybe $5,000] the big money will be transferred and you will receive 15% of $10,500,000! Sure you will! And the money will be delivered by [your choice]: Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy.

I got that exact same thing in a PM right here on Lit. I don't mean that it was simular...it was the exact same wording and personal name. I deleted it, DUH...lol The first thing that went through my mind when I read it was, "Tchya...riiiiiight...and monkeys might fly outa my BUTT!!
*snicker*

I used to get them in snail mail, in these flimsy yellow envelopes with badly-printed, garishly-colored, Nigerian stamps affixed... They made good collage material.

So do these things actually come from real people, really in Nigeria, who really want us to be dumb enough to send them our money?

Kindof. There was some journalist a while ago that dig into it, and found that several of those were run from eastern Europe. Russian mob connection and all that.

Another one that I recieve once in a while is someone who attempts to make a purchase from me online. They will want to pay by money order- and will ask, while I'm at it, if I would buy them a laptop computer at the same time, since they can't get it where they are... They'll even include a couple hundred extra for my trouble.
In fact, would I be willing to send back American dollars as well- they'll include that amount in the money order. (the preposterous idea of sending a money order in American dollars in order to recieve American dollars is never addressed)
I'm sure I would be so surprised to discover that the MO was counterfit! What a shock!
This is a shorter con than the traditional Nigerian Scam, from what I've been told. But I'm sure if the rat thought he could spin it out further he would.

The type of scam is now called a "419 scam." the number 419 is the section of the Nigerian criminal code that deals with fraud. The other countries, around Nigeria, call it "the land of 10 million magicians." Nigerians are not prized for their dependability.

The answer to your question is yes, the mailings really do come from people in Nigeria who want to finds people dumb enough to send money. However, it might be pointed out that they are masters of getting people to send a little money and then more to "finalize the deal" and then more for a bribe and then more . . . You get the idea.

Good thing I never actually planned on sending these assholes money. I know at one point when I was receiving these things on a regular basis I would write back and tell them exactly what I thought of their little ploys.
