We've had a number of threads on this subject, so you might want to do a search. I'd also suggest visiting the bondage section of the site, as that is where you're going to find your more serious ropers. There are two absolute MUST have items here, the first is an emergency rope cutter that is able to quickly and easily cut through anything you use for a restraint, the second item is a safe word with your partner to indicate that she needs to be set free immediately.
Stay away from self tightening knots, aka slip knots, as these are dangerous, particularly in the hands of a novice. Also, beforehand, thoroughly discuss and agree with your partner as to what will be done and the limits thereof. It's one thing to lightly tie hands, and a completely other thing to wrap her from head to toe in a restrictive binding. Know where the boundaries are before you begin. Other than that, all I can offer is to play safe and live to play another day.

A lot of the riggers I know have a set of EMT/trauma shears. I found mine at Walgreen's several years ago, but a cursory glance at their website seems to indicate they no longer carry them. I'm reasonably certain they could be ordered off of Amazon, though.

I will second Two Knotty Boys but I also suggest Twisted Monk. He also sells hemp rope and it is just fantastic. I have a hundred feet or so in blood red. It looks great on my wife.
I also spend a good deal of time on Tumblr looking at predicament bondage photos for ideas.
