Story here.

A bipartisan trio of senators has planned a Tuesday rollout for legislation to remove federal legal barriers to the use of medical marijuana.

Democratic Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Cory Booker of New Jersey are set to join Kentucky Republican Rand Paul for the event, shortly after noon. The new bill would make it so that medical professionals and their patients involved in the use of marijuana and cannabidiol oils for medicinal purposes would not run the risk of running afoul of federal laws.

<snip>

The legislation also lands during a time of strife between Congress and the District of Columbia over the city’s legalization of marijuana, which the legislative branch has sought to block.

Of course, MM would remain illegal in all states that ban it, but at least the federal law would no longer be an obstacle.

Well at least the subject is being brought up.....

I expect the LEO/Prison folks to freak shit, give everyone the stink eye and congress largely do everything they can to avoid even pretending it ever happened.

I don't think they go far enough. Recreational MJ should be legal and restricted the same way alcohol is.

If we legalize much of what is against the laws today we can lower the prison population quite a bit.
How about we get rid of most of the laws and just leave the important ones?
Murder should be left alone. Theft is another of the important ones.
Most of the rest we can shitcan.

Boil it down to say, ten?

You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make idols.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.

Of those ten, only three are worth a damn: murder, theft and perjury are criminal acts under any civilized, and pretty much any uncivilized culture. The other seven are religious law that have no place in a modern secular society.

You could pare it down quite a bit from there. Really only four of them matter.
