At the Yorkshire meet we 'sang' (other words may be more appropriate) On Ilkley Moor.

I have been looking for recordings of typically English songs for a foreign friend. I can find a mass of Irish songs and about one Scots or Welsh compilation for every 20 Irish ones.

But I can't find English CDs. I have found a cassette with some of the songs but very twee (US = cute) renditions. How could they sing 'Hearts of Oak' with twittering sopranos?

Apart from Ilkley Moor, I wanted 'The Lincolnshire Poacher', 'Widdicombe Fair' etc.

What do you think is a typically English song?

Jimmy the Carter's Lad

When Jones's Ale Was New

We've Come a-Pace-Eggin'

I'd Rather Be A Begger Than A King

"Gordon is a moron" - Jilted John

Sorry Ogg, no folksy or traditional songs in there. But they define England to me!

"Tub-Thumping." God, I love that song.

Yup, that's a goodun, and it's better than "Vindaloo", which is another one.

The British Folk Revival in the mid 1960's to early 1970's revitalised and modernised some beautiful English songs, while keeping their spirit.

My personal favorite: Bert Jansch's version of "Jack Orion", thought to be a 15th Century (!) song.

"I've Got A Brand New Combine Harvester (And I'll Give You The Key)" ~ The Wurzels.

Lou - embarrassed to have remembered that one.

I very nearly put that one, but didn't, for precisely that reason :D

Hmmm who would you go nicely in a sandwich with? ;)

Somehow I immensly associate this song with England....

'A British Tar' - HMS Pinnafore (spelling???)

A british tar is a soaring soul, as free as a mountain bird,
His energetic fist should be ready to resist,
A dictatorial word,

His nose should pant and his lip should curl,
His cheeks should flame and his brow should furl,
His bosom should heave and his heart should glow,
And his fist be ever ready for a knock-down blow

His nose should pant and his lip should curl,
His cheeks should flame and his brow should furl,
His bosom should heave and his heart should glow,
And his fist be ever ready for a knock-down blow,

His eyes should flash with an inborn fire,
His brow with scorn be wrung,
He never should bow down to a domineering frown,
Or the tang of a tyrant tongue,

His foot should stamp, and his throat should growl,
His hair should twirl, and his face should scowl,
His eyes should flash, and his breast protrude,
And this should be his customary attitude,

His foot should stamp, and his throat should growl,
His hair should twirl, and his face should scowl,
His eyes should flash, and his breast protrude,
And this should be his customary attitude.

Snoopy, german tar

welcome back, darlin. Sorry about our recent inclement weather. Still, you had good evidence of why we have a pub culture.

Thanks, Jose. I even enjoyed the weather, certainly wasn't going to let rain, hail, gales and all the wuthering keep me inside. I miss my pub and its folk, plus the ales and bitters.

just Perdita
