North Dakota Rejects Abortion Ban, Gay Rights Link

A bill to protect people from being discriminated against based on sexual orientation in housing and employment lost in the House by a vote of 54-34, while an anti-abortion bill to convey constitutional rights to a fertilized egg lost in the Senate by a vote of 29-16.

On the gay rights bill, one Republican said it is important to protect the rights of others before those of gays and lesbians. “There’s a big difference between a behavior and a lifestyle and something you don’t have a choice in,” Rep. Robin Weisz, R-Hurdsfield, told the Dickinson Press. “I don’t think it’s needed. I believe it has consequences that aren’t in the best interests of this state, that do intrude on the rights of others who are also protected under this great constitution.”

Rep. Kathy Hawken, R-Fargo, shot back that gays and lesbians are an important part of the community. “I’m relatively sure no one was checking the sexual orientation of the volunteer sandbaggers in Fargo. It simply didn’t make a difference. People were just people,” she said.

“It has been said that this is a choice,” Hawken said. “Religion is also a choice but yet that’s protected.”

I don't know what cave this Neanderthal Weisz crawled out of, but he did it wearing an asshat. Choice my ass. Giving gays equal rights "intrudes" on the rights of others??? Pu-leease! The only thing that intrudes on is their "right" to to be homophobic, bigoted assholes. Wonder how he made it into the House of Representative without knowing the definition of "EQUAL"!!!

I did like how Hawkens threw his own statement back in his face though!

Well, at least youtube had the balls (in another anti gay thingy I read earlier today) to pull off an anti gay video off the site. So it is pretty messed up the case you are talking about. Oh and my source about the anti gay stuff ? well that is reddit.com But I agree with you, there are some things that are rotten to the core. So anyway some people just suck.

Have you seen the NOM ads? They're all in an uproar about how straight people are having their right to be bigots taken away. It's ghastly. There has been a LOT of backlash against NOM but I fear there are a lot of people quietly nodding their heads (and going to the voting booth) too.

Hey can´t we agree that it is insane that quite a few of you lovely GLBT people lives in a country which calls itself a democracy and they are "bigbrother" of all other countries. And then USA can´t behave when it comes to their own citizens and their human rights. Since if I have something to say about the US government then they can basically kiss my bloody hairy arse. Even though the Danes owes quite a few things to USA. Such as the membership in UN and NATO (and now Fogh Rasmussen is the new chief in NATO). But anyway back to the mainpoint Why can´t USA behave properly when it comes to their citizens ? and abortion ban ? I am just speechless .

I am actually quite glad we have the diversity we do in this country. I just wish there were fewer morons. It's okay by me that people believe differently. A lot of countries are way too homogeneous. Here, it takes all kinds.

I just wish the diversity didn't include quite so many bigots, is all.

Well I love diversity too, but it just irks me when bigots gets the overhand. So I am agreeing with you .

You're right. The NOMites are the "gentler", softer spoken version of the fire and brimstone Fundie Gay Haters. It kinda reminds me of the evolution of the Terminators (first just brute strength but evolving into super chameleons). As much as I detest them, I have to acknowledge that they are effectively reaching a segment of the population that doesn't necessarily "hate" gays but wants to maintain the status quo no matter what. If we don't actively combat it they will easily convince the "Leave It BE-vers" that gay marriage represents what they are most afraid of (change).

The US (on the national level) is not a democracy. A lot of people think so but they're wrong. It's really a federal republic. Sometimes it's also described as a constitutional republic.

But either way, I fail to see how that's relevant. The issue was in fact voted on in North Dakota.

"Behave properly"? You mean the way you think we should?

As far as the abortion ban goes, again that was a state bill (which failed) and there's always people trying to pass weird shit like that. In Denmark do they only ever bring bills to a vote that you completely agree with?

John Doe: no in Denmark there are loads of bills that they pass. That I do NOT agree with. actually there are so many that the constitution is violated time after time again. But at least we do NOT judge the GLBT people. The only thing we basically need is a change in one law, and then GLBT people can marry each other in the church. Since we already have registered partnership.

this thread here shows that Denmark is one of the most GLBT friendly EU countries

But there are loads of things that could be better in that area. And John Doe. I know about the bullshit when it comes to the word "democracy" in USA and I know it is a federal republic. But that DOESN`T mean it is OKAY to violate the human rights of any person whether the person is gay or a fucking terrorist. That is what I am talking about when it comes to behaving properly ! And what makes it worse, is that USA has still NOT signed the human rights bill. The international kind. And what I don´t like, is that DK has done a lot of human rights violations. Thanks to being an ally of USA. Basically the title I use (the custom title) is basically another way of saying a human rights fighter.

And John Doe, I am also well aware of my country´s past when it comes to what Churchill called us just right after WWII and that was "Hitlers little Canary bird". Among other things. And I could mention many other things before the 1900´s when it comes to what the Danes has done and what not. And I have mentioned in some posts (probably some years ago) what the Danes did in the 1950´s to try to "cure" homosexuality and what not.

Irrelevant.

Who said it was okay?

We haven't signed Kyoto either, but that doesn't mean we hate the environment.

Besides, we already have a bill like that. It's called the Constitution.

That's your problem, not ours. It has nothing to do with who you're allied with. It's what your leaders have decided to do. The US gives its citizerns the most liberty of any nation on the planet.

Also irrelevant.

JD: can we agree on that equal rights means equal rights whether you are gay ,bi , straight and so forth ? and not what some dumb politician is saying, and being gay or bi is not a choice. Since to me, I just can´t fathom the whole shebang about homophobia and what not. I basically think the homophobes are ridiculous. And well to say it at least, a lot of the homophobes views are extremely backwards in my mind anyway. One the things that the human rights includes is no human should be killed no matter how extreme their crime has been. But then again that is just one of the human rights. And the last time I looked at the American constitution there I didn't see that part .

Nice thread jack attempt, but please don't try to turn a discussion of gay rights into one about the death penalty, FFS!

Nope, human rights are also the rights of includes equal rights. But death penalty is not a thread hijack. it is just that John Doe´s comments are basically a firestarter all the fucking time. After all, he is just a fucking post whore who tries to piss people off.

If it's a choice then you can choose to live a different "lifestyle" and so it's hardly comprable to other civil rights issues like womens rights 30 years ago or blacks' rights 50 years ago. If it's not a choice then it's a genetic (or some other kind of) aberration and should be cured. They can't have it both ways.

Either way, a relatively minor consideration and still irrelevant to the greater issue of equal rights.

Now that you mention it, when was the last time you looked at our Constitution? I ask because apparently you just skimmed it.

Actually it was a year ago, and I didn´t just skim it. So could you please tell me where it says something about death penalty or not ?

Death penalty is most certainly a thread hijack.

So when Safe_Bet says it's a thread hijack, you say no; when I say it's a thread hijack, you say yes?

Well, maybe when a mod says it's a hijack, that carries more weight?

I think what really happened though is he was being a dick to people for shits and giggles, then got scared when a mod showd up.

That's rich coming from you.

Seriously? You're still harping on the post count thing? It just makes you look like a douchenozzle.

Yeah, as much as I try to be just one of the gang, it's true that I have The Power. Kinda like She-Ra...maybe. Princess of Power, remember? No? Just me? Ahem.

(For the above lines, I hereby officially give myself the "most hijackingest post ever" award.)

Anyway, I have a friend who works for a ND senator, I should ask him what his boss thinks of all this.

Not to worry... I was about to start a "Two Steps Forward, One Step Back II - Without Inane Shit About the Fucking Death Penalty" thread. Kind of a catchy name dontcha think? :D

That way both of the "boys" can stay here and beat there chests and grunt at each other to their hearts content...
