Kind of intimidating isn't it. How do you differentiate your story so that it gets picked out of the "NEW" list?

Data Here, for those who doubt my numbers.

The title is the first thing viewers see. It better be good to attract the readers.
The kicker line can help by adding new attractions to the reader.

With E-fiction there is at least a cover and in hardback, a dust jacket. We're working with minimalism here folks.

How do you pick your titles?

Believe me, I don't expend a whole lot of energy on them. I figure that if I post it in a popular category it will eventually get read and voted on. Contests certainly do boost readership, though. I've got more votes for "Snowed In" than for any story I've written in the last four years!

How to choose a title

I recommend reading
Whispersecret's advice in the How-To category.

My two most effective titles for attracting views have been Virgin's Sister and Breastfeeding Class. However the readers, once interested by the title, need to like the story too.

Oh lord....titles are absolutely the worst aspect for me. Generally, I stink at them. I've been spoiled for thirty years as a journalist having editors at the mags/newspapers always titling my stuff in the end (either because they know the spacing available or realize my suggested title sucks and pick a better one.)

Either I get an epiphany (not common) or I go to friend(s) and we have a brainstorm session after I've let them read the story or explained it (usual modus operendi)

Case in point, I almost (about damn time!!) I have the first Horner Springs story finished and have no idea what to call it so when I have the Litsters who created the characters I'm using check it over I'm going to beg for title suggestions.

Did I mention I hate coming up with titles and that I suck at them........

Really like this thread!

And the title 'problem' is compounded by having to attract readers from around the globe...

I do try for one that arrests attention, or, as Ogg notes, one that makes quite clear what kind of experience is on offer. For the more blatant categories, the latter seem to work best. But my most-viewed story is most viewed, I think, simply because I used a Z title ("Zonked").

I usually don't spend extra time thinking of titles. They usually fall out early in the writing of the story--if they haven't been the first thing that occurred to me following the appearance of "the hook."

I spend less time on the blurb. Lit. doesn't give enough room for what I usually want to write.

For a reader, though, I'd think several things come into play on choosing the story to read--the placement on the "New" list, whether there's an E or an H beside it, and the category being first--and then the author's name, the title, and the blurb (probably in that order).
