That Was The Week That Was.

What a week.Traumatic?,yes.Frustrating?,yes.Annoying?,oh yes.

What's the matter,I hear you say, couldn't get your leg over?.

No,that's not it.One week ago I had my first PC installed.Since
then I have made every mistake known to man and a whole
bunch I invented myself.

Why?.To put it simply, lack of instruction.

If I buy a car or hi-fi I get a manual or instruction book which
will tell you what each itsy bitsy button does. What did I get
with my PC?,zilch, zippo, sweet FA.NO, that's not quite true.I got a book that tells me how to start up and who to call if(when) it
went wrong.

I know that I can get instruction from the computer, but how do I find out where to look?.

Do the makers never consider that some people have never owned a computer before?.

Still I did find one very useful item,'Restore settings to(date)'.
At lest I got MS Word and CD-write back.

Actually I havee to admit it's been kinda fun and it's great to have
access to Lit and not have to use TVInternet.

So, have you got a computer horror story?.;)

Since I was in the industry for thirty years, yes. troble is all of then are from the design/manufacture point of view.

just went through a hard drive crash, and for a writer, that's as big a horror as can be imagined

my novel is safe...was on a zip disc...but scads of little stuff is gone...ideas, lists, paragraphs, even sentences i liked the sound of...little parts of stories just beginning to blossom

i know everyone says back up, back up, back up, and for the big stuff i did, but all that little stuff was the germ of big stuff to come

ah well

one day about 2 months ago, my operating system decided to reject one of my drivers, so the machine restarted. and since it didnt shut down properly, it ran scandisk, but as soon as it was finished doing that, it restarted again.. and it kept doing this. it did nothing else. there was no back up, nothing. i called comcrap to see what i could do, they tell me i must be mistaken since the machine i'm using doesnt work with win2k installed on it. i know better since it's been running on here since march and has been since that event without any problems. they tell me to call micro$oft where you never get a person, let alone an answer. so i was pretty much screwed. at least until i remembered to see what the computer geeks (i'm one too, so its ok) had to say about fixing it over on the ars technica forum ... and because of the great computer geniuses there, i was able to get my computer fixed and running..

the other computer horror i had was this summer, when my keyboard decided to break. i would press the "a" key and i would get "t ." and it kept doing that with every key i pressed, only giving different things for each one.. and after awhile it would just repeatedly show things. i had the hardest time with the machine when i turned it on. i have to enter a password to get into the system (there is no cancel) and i was unable to do that since multiple things would show up and i had no clue if any of it was even the right letters and so on. so i call comcrap again hoping to get them to send me a new keyboard, and they start talking to me like i'm stupid. and they tell me i cant be running win2k on my computer because its never been tested on it. well, i know better since i'm running it. and boy were they lucky that i'm a computer person, otherwise they would have been screwed (they didnt even know where to find the device manager and other simple things like that).. after about an hour talking with the "tech" guy, he finally gave in to me and had a new keyboard sent out the next day.

oh... and mig.. as for getting a manual for it... talk to the manufacturer... there should have been one included, along with one on how to use the monitor, something to show how to hook everyhting up, how to use the mouse, possibly the keyboard, and getting started with windows

Thank God!

As soon as I finish the research I'm buying the first pc for myself that I've ever owned. Until now, I've just used a laptop from work (that stays permanently at home.) MIG's post struck fear in my heart!

Alright so I exagerated a little but not very much, promise.

Learning to move around took a lot of time and in the process
I lost all my icons,MS word,CD(R),the whole programme bar and
various other things.

My mouse pointer kept changing into a hand with a pointy finger
that left scratchmarks on my desktop.

Of course I had no idea how I'd caused this or how to get things
back to normal.

Then I found 'System Restore' and restored settings back to the
day after installation.Phew! happy again.

In addition, having paid good money to have the system set up,
the installer put me on the wrong Freeserve service. So for the
first day I was paying call charges.

I'm still not sure if my e-mail is working properly and I don't know how to find out, yet.

I'm happy.
:) :D :)
