I think you're right. Maybe it was June Lockhart who played the mother of Timmy in Lassie. I tend to get Beaver and Lassie confused.

June Lockhart also appeared in Petticoat Junction but she was not a mother.

Quite some time ago I did a report for a 20th Century Pop Culture course. As I recall, Lassie actually outgrew “her” family and had an entirely new one was installed.


FIRST FAMILY lasted four seasons (‘54-‘57)

Jeff - Tommy Rettig
Mother - Jan Clayton
Gramps - George Cleveland

The actor who played the grandfather (Cleveland) died during the summer hiatus and they began the next season with the old family moving to the city and a new family moving onto the farm. Somehow they managed to leave Lassie behind, to start a new season with a younger co-star.


SECOND FAMILY lasted another six seasons (’58 - ‘64)

Mother #2 - June Lockhart

About that Mother #1 & #2 nonsense.

At the end of the first year with the new family, they changed Timmy’s parents for some reason I never could discover. The characters and character names remained the same (and same last name as Timmy) so I figure they just pulled a Bewitched. In any case, June Lockhart was the third “mother” on Lassie and Timmy’s second mother.

I just felt sorry for poor old Lassie, abandoned, bewildered, controlled by Ray Weatherwax, and a transvestite in the ‘50s, no wonder he was so high strung!

What do you suppose Lassie was really “trying to tell” them?
