Turning poems into songs

Hi all, I've always enjoyed a good poem, although I can't write one to save my life. However, I do enjoy writing songs and it occured to me that poems are very much like lyrics to a song.

So I was wondering if anyone would care to write a poem that I could change into a song, the only real need for this poem would be it has to have a chorus after each verse. It's just an idea, and I hope to hear some thoughts on it.

I'll leave a link to my website just so that you can see I take my singing seriously, thanks in advance.

Hi Carl. When Judo returns to the board, I bet she could write a poem that would make a great song. I know I would suck at it. I think there are a few others here that may be able to write poetry that would work well as songs.

I'm downloading one of your songs now to see what your style is. I see you wrote the lyrics to two of them.

OMG, Carl! I just listened to You and I. It's not what I expected. It's incredible! It sounds like a song you'd hear on the radio -- one in the top 10 on the charts. I was stunned. I was impressed. I saved the song. Good lyrics, Carl. Why do you need help? Have you run out of song ideas?
I have to go down another one... :)

I actually wrote the lyrics to three of them, I just forgot to write that down. lol

The ones I wrote were "You and I" "I love you" and "Smile in passing" I wrote the last one for Juicylips.:p

Anyway, thanks for the reply, I'm hoping to get a song from this and if I do I'll put it onto my site for everyone to hear.

I posted before I saw this, otherwise I would've answered both. lol I think I want someone elses thoughts, on what would make a good ballad or love song. Poetry has passion that I'm unable to write down, hence the reason I asked here.

I'm capable of writing lyrics, but they're not great so I hope something special comes from all this.

Thanks again, by the way I love that av.:p

I'm downloading I Love You right now. In You and I, I was impressed with the singing and music and lyrics as a whole. It sounded very good to me.

Do you ever look through the poems online here, and see any that would work if they had a chorus added? Maybe the poet would be willing for you to use it.

funny thing...

I was just thinking about this the other day. Below is a poem I wrote for another recent thread, which has the background to it. It is on the angry side, but I was thinking after I wrote it that the structure would probably lend itself to song. I'm just too busy to get my guitar out at the moment... I'd love to hear what you would make of it, if it speaks to you that is.

Quack

the D

you were a good, a loving man
you were funny, easy going
you were an honest man
you were one who works hard
you were one who loved his family

you are none of these things
you are player liar weakling

I gave you a chance
I gave you my trust
I gave you my heart
I gave you my time

you deserved none of these things
you are drunkard smoker drughead

you know what you are
you know why she left
you know how I feel
you know what you are

you hide from the truth and the world
you are coward user thief

I was taken by your lies
I was angry
I was hurt
I was blinded

you can not hide yourself for ever
you are but a pathetic little child

may your soul wither
in the gutter
you call your life

I did have a look, but poems don't normally have a chorus after each verse, although some do. Plus of course it's not percieved as a chorus anyway, so I haven't found anything suitable.

I figured if I told you all what I was looking for, you could taylor a poem to fit. Here's hoping anyway.

It is good DR4KE, but it's a little too moody for what I'm looking for, or too dark in tone, if you know what I mean. Thank you for the contribution though, I appreciate that.

Hi Carl -

(Nice AV, by the way). I tried to download from your site, but I'm on a Mac and the .wma file was just gobbledygook. Is there some other way?

Who do you listen to?

;)

Hi JUDO, the only other way I've gotten my music to other people is by sending them through yahoo. So if you'd like me to send one or two, my yahoo name is carl_east2000.

Now, I repeat - Who do you listen to?

I don't have any favourites, I listen to all forms of music. I do enjoy pop and country though, but if it's a good song I'll buy it.

That's my attitude anyway.

Carl

I've just sent "You and I" to you JUDO, let me know if you want any of the other four.

Carl

Okay, Carl, work with me, baby. I'm trying to narrow this down. Love Santana, Hate Mary J. Blige, Love Nora Jones, Hate Sheryl Crow.

Sure, a good song is a good song, but I'm not going to write Tony Bennet for Joni Mitchell.

Ballads are my favourite type of songs, but unlike you I can't tell you who I hate, cause I don't hate anyone. If by your statement you mean whose style do I prefer, I would have to say Garth Brookes or Elton John.

I know, I'm strange.:D

Carl

Strange? Nothing strange with Garth John or Elton Brooks. Works for me. Some of the best lyrics ever written were by Elton when he was hungry.

The email got returned I'm affraid, which I thought would happen. So unless you download from yahoo, you're not going to get to hear it I'm affraid, sorry.:(

Carl

Your connection at Yahoo only immediately fills an html page with characters, that is what it accomplishes on a Mac. And I cannot save the file as something like an mp3, wma or wav file. If it allowed me to download a file and save it, we'd have no problem. Is there another way for you to connect? Can you attach a wma file to an email?

- Judo

It's a wma file that I'm sending, this time I've zipped it as well, although I don't think it will make a difference. The trouble is I haven't got any tools to change it into other wave forms.

Carl

Well, I asked for lyrics, and that's exactly what I got. JUDO kindly sent me an idea, which I must confess I butchered a little. So the following song was written by JUDO, Carl and Robert in a joint effort.

I'm placing a link at the bottom of this post, for anyone wishing to check it out. It's done in a country style, of which this is our first attempt.

What am I gonna do?

I wake up in the morning
Always thinking of you
I open the curtains
While sipping a coffee
Wondering what I should do

The bed feels so enormous
Especially without you
I tidy my clothes
Getting everything ready
I don’t know what else to do

What am I gonna do with a day that feels so lonely
What am I gonna do without you

I sit into the morning
My minds not even their
I try to pretend
That I don’t really care
But I know what a fool I can be

If only you had stayed I’m sure that we could work it out
If only I had known that you had any doubt

I wait into the evening
Hoping to hear you call
I know it won’t happen
I can’t help but wishing
You would just come back home

What am I gonna do with a day that feels so lonely
What am I gonna do without you
What am I gonna do with a day that feels so lonely
What am I gonna do without you
