We discussed this recently, but I've been doing more research on it for an upcoming paper. Do you agree with this assessment? I can't help but agree. That creates a very interesting contradiction within my own beliefs. I have to figure out if I'm comfortable with such a contradiction.

I think reading a lot of feminist literature on pornography has put me in a strange mood lately. At times, I can't help but agree with certain anti-pornography feminists. It's also a view that is hard to stomach. It's hard for me to believe what they say, because it really causes a lot of problems for me regarding the origins and influences on my own sexuality. It also kinda depresses me about the state of women in our society. But, I digress. Your reaction and opinions regarding the first statement, are the ones that interest me.

I'd agree that it's culturally influenced but I don't necessarily see the tie-in to porn. I would think that the cultural conditioning happens at a prepubescent age when most of us are entirely oblivious to any such thing as porn.

My first thought to this was "bullshit". But thinking about it, it has to be at least some what true. Otherwise humans would never mate, never propagate, the world would be a less crowded place.

If it weren't culturally influenced, and half the population of a small tribe in Africa thought that blue eyed blondes were attractive, and didn't want to have sex with anyone else, that tribe would die out quickly.

i think most cultures have a set of sexual behaviors that are deemed appropriate. these behaviors are propagated and encouraged. they are learned the same way we learn cultural standards of beauty.

however, sociology generalizes to a degree that i am often not comfortable with. that is a general trend but there is tremendious individual variation within any culture.

The digression you made lends to a good point though, lav.

If we are to learn our sexual turn ons, which by the way is evidently the case, and I am in agreement with that conception, then what we see in porn, magazines and the pop industry can determine all to well to us what to find attractive, even if it isn't realistic, causing many men, men like hannsel to find even your most pretty, average women to be bogus because they aren't living up to the silicon goddesses they lust after. Women can be guilty of this too, and it sucks for those men who don't fit the mold of a woman's outward appearances, based on what is in trend by these means of learning sexual drive motivators.


Let me just say that I relate to your discomfort with this topic.
It is sort of a shame. I realize all too well what my worth to many men I've been with was when I had a perfect body. Too bad those guys didn't learn to respect women for who they are, and not what they look like.

Thank god there are many admireable men don't rely on porn to base their interests and turns ons by.

As regards the whole turn-on topic. I'm not sure I believe that background and culture determines it. Or at least I don't believe it's entirely dependent on overt culture. I, for instance, come from a background most folks would not readily suspect, given my own turn-ons and sexual preferences. I'm pretty much the opposite in preferences of what I ws taught and learned. I'm not the way I am out of any conscious rebellion. This is just what I've found I like.
