Has any of you wrote a story with no voting? Sometimes I get aggravated with the readers. I just posted a new story. 'My Sister, My Love' and the first two votes were #1. After two more votes it made it up past 3.76. I can't believe any story deserves a one. I guess someone has it out for me.

What does turning off the voting do?

Here's the story if any of you want to tell me what you think.

I enjoy writing but sometimes you just want to give up. I started a new story today but now I'm not sure Iwant to finish it. Anyway thanks for listening to my rants. Usually votes don't bother me but for some reason today it did.

When I write a loving wives story (and only do it for survivor), I tend to turn the voting and comments off. I *know* certain groups will have problems with the story because of its content, and I don't feel like dealing with it.

I prefer comments (esp constructive comments) and think votes and popularity is pointless, which is why I have turned votes off on every piece of writing I've posted.

But that's just me

Do whatever you think is best for you

List?

Of course you won't be on anyof the list? Correct?
I don't care about contest and usually my comments and feedback are good, even though sometimes all over the place.

I just wonder why someone would vote #1's and not even leave a feedback why they didn't like it. I figure it's just me they don't like, even though no-one has ever met me. haha

I agree

I agree on the comments. I like the back and forth turmoil I cause but the voting is something else again.

Just aggravating!!!

I like comments and votes as well. You've got plenty of red so you're a good writer. Give it some time, probably unlucky first couple of voters.

You probably left a participle dangling.

I know how dangling participles p*** me off! Initially I throw chairs for about 45 minutes, then sulk for about the next day. Maybe a hunger strike after that if things get out of hand. You think I kid?

I haven't submitted yet, but I guess you can turn the voting off, which I think is a good thing. I've posted at nifty, and people just email you there. I like that sort of interaction.

who cares about the lists

that's not important, imho

Yes, I've posted a couple of stories with the voting turned off. Take heart, the 1's should be swept at some time. I usually turn the voting off and then back on just to make my work ineligible for the monthly contests.

I have read a couple of stories that truly deserved a 1. It boggled my mind that they were approved at all.

I have too... It does boggle the mind and I wander . . .HUH? ? ?

DG - - - also take into account the category. For some reason folks don't like certain ones and will slam it with one votes, simply for that reason. I think it is quite silly for anyone to do that based on that regard, because if their morals are sooo high that they feel they must vote on category basis and not story construction, then what are they doing on a porn site in the first place?

Of course you wouldn't joke about a thing like that :)

But I hope you won't feel like throwing chairs if I tell you that you've given me a delicious case of smirkey giggles :) :) :)

One of my all-time favorites was reading about a 1980's-era President of Lebanon, who was described as a "dapper man in a blue suit with thick dark hair." :)

(Okay, so Groucho Marx said: "This morning, I shot a wildebeest in my pajamas....How he got into my pajamas, I'll never know."
Except that it wasn't a wildebeest. It was either a tiger or an elephant, but I can't remember which. Anyone know?)

Be flattered that the Trolls rate your work high enough to bother their arses and fling a 1-bomb at it. The votes will be swept in the next toilet flush so don't worry

Besides, you normally have enough votes after a day that a few 1-bombs won;t make any difference. :)

I have 1-bombs thrown at me periodically. Sometimes it annoys me, sometimes it doesn't. It's just part of life on Lit sadly.

Hey, Dark and Red, sounds kind of cool, you two ought to get together. haha Dark Red would be Maroon wouldn't it?

I always thought that a writer shouldn't get less than a three. If the story was that bad, I could never make it to the end to even vote.

Vamp, I don't really care about votes that much, I just wish the people would vote fairly.

Thanks all, for your opinions.

Are all ones periodically swept at sometime?

Wouldn't that artificially skew all the scores to the high side, or is it assumed that anyone who would vote a '1' is a blithering idiot who never should have been issued a license to operate a keyboard-&-mouse in the first place?

- Quince

(Or do they check for lines like "I shuvved my birsting cokk deep up her hul", and exempt '1' votes for those stories from the sweep? :)

I'm surprised!!!

I never knew. Of course I don't spend much time on AH. So I don't know much of anything.

Hi Rach! nice to here from you. How did you know I would end up getting a lot of votes. Psychic or what. It's up to 15 votes and at 4.47. Usually votes don't get heavy unless there is a contest.

What bothered me is some stories I really try hard to make it different. This was one of those. It's a story within a story. It's only 2 1/2 lit pages. One of my shorter ones lately. I had to go throughthe trouble with putting italics in and all.

Oh well, my rants are about over. Still can't get back to what I was writting. It will just have to wait.
Thanks again all

I have no real idea on how they do their sweeps. I don't have a lot of faith in Lit's ability to provide accurate scoring.

I'm sure that some 1 votes must be left alone - particularly from stories with the immortal line
"I shuvved my birsting cokk deep up her hul"
Hey have you read that one of mine? :D

I think the overall vote pattern is looked at - ie, if a story had mad mostly 4's and 5's then two 1 votes are likely to be troll votes and swept. However, this is a contentious issue and many threads have tried to fathom the dark mysteries of sweeps (and failed miserably).

That's always been the problem here. There is no clarification of the votes and everyone has a different opinion of how they should work (and remember, the AH is a very small portion of all the writers here). You don't think anyone should get below a 3. Another person looks at the scores and says, "Well, the worst story that got through is a 1, the best is a 5...everything else is in the middle." Are they wrong?

1s will get swept, during contests I've seen 3s get swept as well (legitimate ones). I've seen authors here complain that 4s were "troll votes". It just makes me throw up my hands. DG, it is up to you if you want to end the voting. If you're at the mid-3s, being eligible for a contest is irrelevant anyway. I had a story that stayed in the 3.7 range for 2 months. I did a slight modification to clear up some of the areas that bothered people and it rose to 4.1 (still my lowest, but I was happy that I could get it to rise). If you continue to get low votes, you can consider that something in the story doesn't work for the readers and make changes, or you can stand your ground. Either way is legitimate. It just depends on why you write. Some people don't care what the readers think and are writing for themselves, some are trying to write stories that will appeal to the widest range of people (or even a narrow group who will really enjoy it). There is no right or wrong way to do it.

I write for the fun of it. I get some crazy idea in my head and decide to put it on paper. I guess I feel that most writers really try to put out a story that they can be proud of. If it's not something that I care to read, I pass on it. If it's horribly written, I hit the back button.

I'm one of those root for the underdog type person. I like the H's as much as the next person. No voting - no H's. I can live without the votes but I still love the comments, both the positive and negative. If you've ever read my stories, you know I get a lot of each. Today when I clicked on Lit, my story wasn't even posted. I came back a few minutes later to read another authors story and mine was there, way down the page.

I went to my submissions page and there it was with two shit votes. It just pissed me off. I guess I went off the deep end. I'm not usually like that.

Anyway, Rachlou was right!!! The votes started coming in and it's now around 4.70. Funny it only has 2 comments and no H. haha

I guess my rants were for naught. Thanks for your reply. You are right. Everyone has an opinion and we can't please them all.
