Turkey wants to block Finland and Sweden from joining NATO

Sweden has always been so determinedly neutral that it stayed out of WWII. Putin must have them really scared.

Why would they care?
The Turks? They're extremely sensitive about anything having to do with the Kurds. Now that there is a practically autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan and Syrian Kurdistan, they must be all the more nervous.

See Kurdistan. About half of it is in Turkey.

Kurdistan
If Iranian Kurdistan gets involved in this, things get even more complicated.

Or...they recognize staying neutral in today's world will result in failure for all. Some fights...you must fight.

So 29 out of the 30 members approve, and NATO admits Finland and Sweden. Turkey might whine about it, but I doubt they would actually leave. Erdoğan would raise hell, but in the end, it would just be rhetoric. Same as Hungary and the EU oil embargo. They would never agree ( and I can actually agree on that point). Pass the ban and ignore that Hungary is not complying.

Does a single NATO member have the power to veto the admission of a new member?

The Kurdish rebels taking sanctuary in Sweden and Finland that those countries won't extradite because they don't believe they will get a fair trial in Turkey.

There's more to it than that Ogg. Kurdish 'rebels' are scattered throughout NATO nations. Hell, the one of the alleged leaders of the attempted 2016 coup lives in Pennsylvania. Erdogan wants something material/financial out of this so he's going to use his leverage.

Not quite. Finland and Sweden have declined many Turkish requests for European arrest warrants and there has been diplomatic awkwardness between them and Turkey for years. Finland and Sweden regard the accusations against the Kurds as politically motivated, not criminal.

Turkey knows that the US will NEVER allow extradition from the US to Turkey. US extradition treaties are very biased in favour of getting people extradited TO the US but NOT the other way around. The Syrian Kurds were US allies until Trump pulled the plug on them.

I'm not suggesting that his objections are without merit, merely that a little "pot sweetener" will make them go away.

That is what NATO expect. They see Turkey's objection as a basis for negotiation.

PS. Turkey is the ONLY NATO country that has invaded the territory of another NATO member when they took over Northern Cyprus from the Greek government of the whole of Cyprus. There is still an UN-patrolled border between the two and Turkish Cyprus is NOT recognised as a legitimate state by anyone except Turkey.

Turkey wants a whole bunch of f-16's in compensation from being dropped from the f-35 program and that's going to cause the Biden admin. some heart burn.

If Russia were to attack Turkey from the rear, would Greece help?

The thing to remember about Turkey is it is the real outlier in Nato. Turkey's sponsorship of terror groups like Hamas and Syrian Al Qaeda affiliates, and its betrayal of American intelligence in the past, are reasons why Nato should kick them out but there is no process for doing so. Turkey is a Trojan Horse inside of Nato, but it does control access to the Black Sea which makes it useful to the defense of Nato. Turkey knows it's value and uses its Nato membership as a way to exploit the other members. For instance, President Erdogan is said to be signaling a readiness to drop his opposition to Sweden and Finland's membership if he was to get something in return. With that in mind, we can bet he's lobbying Putin about how much he might be ready to part with to keep them out of Nato. Erdogan's complaint about Finland and Sweden being havens for international terrorism is a mere projection on his part.

There is not a veto per se...but all members must agree to take a new member. Turkey can talk shit...but they won't vote no
