Elspeth’s mother died of the sweating sickness when Elspeth was just four years old and was brought up by her physician father Joseph. An only child she struggled to understand her father’s world and sought to assist him as much as her gender would allow. Life for a professional woman in Tudor times was difficult but for a woman medic it was nearly impossible for she was in danger of being denounced as a witch.

By the time Elspeth was twenty two years old her father was well respected in Court and had even been mentioned by the King. In 1528 the affairs of court were taken over by the King’s obsession with Anne Boleyn and when the sweating fever hit Kent the King sent Joseph to Hever to ensure the Boleyn family did not fall victim to the disease. For the first two days Joseph did his duty but on the third day he fell from his horse and was unable to complete his task.

Elspeth had to step up to the plate and complete her father’s work by dressing as a man trying to disguise her femininity. She had a success rate of 100% during the next four days and believed she had escaped without detection. Or had she? If she were exposed she would be denounced for witchcraft and burnt at the stake alongside her father.

Thomas Donley was one of the minor Anglo-Norman over lords of Ireland. He was one of the brash young Bucks that King Henry liked to surround himself with. Some saw the king as very religious, how had the Pope in Rome put it? Oh yes Defender of The Faith. That was before his Lady wife Queen Katherine had failed to produce a male heir to carry on the Tudor Dynasty. Before the Boleyn girls had caught the King’s eye. The eldest quickly succumbing to the kings carnal desires. The younger Boleyn girl, Ann, was much wiser, why be the King’s Mistress when you could be his Queen. Woolsey had paid the price for failing to obtain a divorce for the king and he had lost the Office of Chancellor of England and nearly his life. Thomas Moore then became Chancellor, how long he would last in that office was anyone’s guess for he was a moral man. Yet it was ambitious men like Cromwell that Thomas Donley was modeling himself after. Men who knew what they wanted, and who simply took it.

The sweating sickness had driven the King and his court from London to Hampton Court. Yet it was not Queen Katherine who presided over court at Hampton, but Mistress Ann Boleyn. As much as Thomas Donley would have loved to be with the king and his court he had been sent as a messenger to the Boleyn home to inquire after their health. He was cursing his luck when he saw a young lad, and inquired who he might be.

”That is the Master Physician who has kept the sweating sickness for our door.”

A rueful smile bowed Donley’s lips Master is it? No more like Mistress. So this calmly young wench thought she could pass herself off as a man. Thomas laughed. This young girl could provide him with hours of amusement, while he was exiled to the country.

“Excuse me Sir but you appear terribly young to be a Master Physician………..”

Thomas made no effort to hide the disbelief in his voice. There was no doubt in Donley’s mind that the creature before him was a young girl.

“…………and you a beardless youth.”

Was that a flash of panic he saw in the girl’s eyes. Thomas Donley idly wondered if this stunning young creature would try and run out her bluff.

Elspeth felt the muscles in her stomach tighten as the mysterious Thomas Donley hovered round the beds of those she was treating. Her heart missed a beat when he mentioned her young appearance and her smooth skin. Had he discovered her secret? Or was he just passing a comment. Her breasts were bound tight by strong ribbon material while her white shirt remained buttoned and collared. Her black trousers clung to her legs and with her short hair at a distance she looked like a young man.

'Quiet Elspeth' she said to herself 'don't panic, he's got no proof so play it by ear'. As she took a deep breath her thoughts were interrupted by a scream from the living quarters of the sergeant at arms "HELP!" Came the cry "MY DAUGHTER HAS GONE INTO LABOUR WHILE AT PRAYER!" Elspeth grabbed her bag and pushing Donley out of the way and rushed in to see the poor woman collapsed on the floor. Noticing Donley was behind her she shouted "HELP ME GET HER ONTO THE COUCH!" Donley and two other men assisted and Elspeth laid her out. "I need towels, linen and hot water." She turned to the girl and said "Deep breaths, slow breaths and try to keep calm".

The sun had well set by the time the new life was in the world, a baby girl with a healthy set of lungs. Calling for the child's father and the grandmother Elspeth said "Both mother and baby are well" reaching into her bag she removed some herbs "Mix these with warm water and give your wife three small goblets a day. It will fight infection and give her energy. I'll be back in the morning."

Leaving the room Elspeth gathered her bag together and prepared to go back to her father. She hoped Donley had gone home.

"HELP! MY DAUGHTER HAS GONE INTO LABOUR WHILE AT PRAYER!"

The distressed call of the manor’s sergeant at arms, had this slip of a girl, collecting her medical supplies. As this Master Physician brushed by Donley all doubts about who she was evaporated. Oh she could bind her breasts, and try to disguise her famine harms but she could not deceive him any longer. He smiled as she confidently declared,

"HELP ME GET HER ONTO THE COUCH!"

This girl had the skills of a midwife, an occupation that was the province of women.

Thomas Donley bided his time as this bold young creature went about her tasks as she helped to issue the arrival of a new life into the conflict of Tudor England. Posing as a man would bring a sentence of prison in a convent by the Church. Yet if she was discovered by the protestors she would denounced as a witch and handed over the inquisitor, who would investigate the charges and put Elspeth to the question.

"Both mother and baby are well……..Mix these with warm water and give your wife three small goblets a day. It will fight infection and give her energy. I'll be back in the morning."

Thomas Donley followed the young deceiver from the birthing chamber. He cornered Elspeth in the dark corner of the hall.

“Tell me Master Physician what your name is Mistress?”

Donley’s body was pressed closely to Elspeth’s, his hot warm breath washed over the nape of the girl’s neck.

“Well Mistress………..”

'Well Mistress ....

Elspeth had to think fast to save herself and her father. "I am here under the orders of the King" she whispered back. "If any member of the Boleyn family dies because YOU prevented me from treating them the King will not be a happy man. I suggest you get out of my way."

As she spoke the Sergeant at Arms stepped into the yard and said "Physician, I thank you for my wife's life and the health of my baby. I'll ensure the King hears of your work. Will you fine with us tomorrow?"

Elspeth smiled at the Sergeant and in her deepest voice replied "I thank you Master Sergeant, I will be pleased to dine with you tomorrow". Looking round she added "My supplies are at risk from bandits. Could you spare me a guard to ensure I'm not robbed?" The Sergeant agreed so Elspeth added "Thank you sir. I'll wait inside while you allocate me a guard."

So this young vixen intended to run her bluff out. Donley found that he had a begrudging respect for this audacious Miss. Yet this wayward young lady needed to learn her place in the confines of ridged Tudor society. Thomas Donley’s train of thought was interrupted by the Sergeant at arms as he thanked the little imposter for her assistance in the birth of his child.

"I thank you Master Sergeant; I will be pleased to dine with you tomorrow. My supplies are at risk from bandits. Could you spare me a guard to ensure I'm not robbed?"

He saw the contented little smile that bowed the corners of her lips. It was about time this headstrong Miss learn her place.

“Sergeant I am Sir Thomas Donley lieutenant of his Majesty the King. I have royal warrants to detain any suspected of witchcraft.”

The veiled threat to expose Elspeth was clearly implied.

“I shall require the assistance of the Master Physician.”

Donley paused as he let the impact of his words hit both the Sergeant and the little imposture. It did not bode well for any that attempted to thwart the desires of King Henry. He then boldly turned to Elspeth a wicked gleam in his eyes.

“You must be exhausted Master Physician and a hot bath is in order, I shall join you and we can discuss this problem of witchcraft.”

This was going to be a battle of wits as well as guile but Elspeth was up for it. Donley was now invoking the threat of witchcraft and suggesting it be discussed in the common bath. Elspeth felt her heart begin to invade as the thought of what might follow pounded her mind. It was obvious Donley had uncovered her secret and now he wished to uncover her body. She noticed a look in his eyes, a look she had never seen in anyone before but she knew what it meant.

Elspeth had not had time to think about men or boyfriends throughout her short life. From her earliest memory she had sought to please her father and help him in his work. She had studied, watched, assisted and given herself totally to his work of healing. She had worn men's clothes most of her life because it enabled her to fulfill her ambition. Now all that was under threat from the lustful Donley. She could try to negotiate with him but she knew there was only only one price he would accept in exchange for his silence. For a moment she found herself in stunned silence wondering how Donley would deal with her virginity.

Then a moment of inspiration hit her and she took a deep breath. Turning to Donley she said "Thank you Sir, I will do everything I can do to assist you tomorrow but tonight I'm tired". Turning to the Sergeant she said "Master Sergeant you will recall the King's orders regarding the sweating sickness that until it is expunged from the realm there is to be no common bathing." Looking back to Donley she smiled and in a deep voice added "I'll go home now sir, take a private bath and in the morning, after a good sleep I'll help you all I can."

If this didn't work Elspeth knew she would certainly become a woman before she had even been a girl. "Master Sergeant" she added "Can you spare me a guard for the night?"

Once again this young maiden tried to slip from the trap that Donley had set for her as she again sought the aid of the Sergeant at arms. In her deepest and hopefully manly voice, Elspeth declared.

"Thank you Sir, I will do everything I can do to assist you tomorrow but tonight I'm tired. Master Sergeant you will recall the King's orders regarding the sweating sickness that until it is expunged from the realm there is to be no common bathing."

Thomas Donley enjoyed this young maiden’s agile mind and quick wits as she maneuvered to escape the fate that was closing in on her. As she sought the Sergeant’s unwitting aid in her girlish attempts to escape. Again she turned her attentions to Donley.

I'll go home now sir, take a private bath and in the morning, after a good sleep I'll help you all I can."

There was a look of triumph in her soft eyes, as she added,

"Master Sergeant can you spare me a guard for the night?"

“I am shocked Master Physician that you would ask the good sergeant to desert his lady wife just delivered of child.”

He turned to the sergeant and pressed a gold sovereign into his hand.

“For the child Sergeant. Worry not I shall Personally see to it that the Master Physician safely reaches his bed.”

”Thank you lieutenant for my lady wife and the child.”

The man pocketed the gold coin and bowing her retired leaving Elspeth alone with him. Thomas Donley then turned his attention to the little imposture.

“Come your bed awaits you Master Physician.”

“I am shocked Master Physician that you would ask the good sergeant to desert his lady wife just delivered of child.”

Elspeth was about to reply but before she could Donley had volunteered to escort her with the words "Come your bed awaits you Master Physician. "

"Master Donley" Elspeth replied "I didn't want Master Sergeant to leave his wife and baby. I wouldn't leave mine!" Turning to the Sergeant she said "I was wondering if you could spare one of your guards to stand guard tonight and protect my herbs."

Turning to Donley she said "Sorry to ask you to return your gold sovereign but I won't need your escort tonight. I've decided to stay with the mother and baby, you can never be too careful can you?"

It was going to be difficult, her breasts ached to be released from the ribbons that held them in place. She knew she would have to confront Donley soon but she had one more hope of escaping with her honour intact. In the Boleyn estate was the three spired Church of St Peter the Apostle. Turning to the Sergeant she said "Tomorrow being Sunday I would love to join you for Mass in the morning."

Going up to Donley she said in a whisper "If you want a woman for the night I suggest you visit the Hever Tavern and buy a woman. They have many there who can help relieve your needs". She smiled in triumph and moved towards the Sergeant's home.

"Master Donley I didn't want Master Sergeant to leave his wife and baby. I wouldn't leave mine!"

Elspeth calmly replied with just an air of self righteous arrogance, as she once more turned to the bewildered Sergeant for support

"I was wondering if you could spare one of your guards to stand guard tonight and protect my herbs.”

The little imposture then turned to Donley and casually announced,

"Sorry to ask you to return your gold sovereign but I won't need your escort tonight. I've decided to stay with the mother and baby, you can never be too careful can you?"



There was a self satisfied smile that bowed the girl’s lips.

“The sovereign was not for you Master Physician, but for the Sergeant to share a point or two with his men.”

There was a dark scowl in Thomas Donley’s eyes that nailed the hapless Sergeant where he stood. It did not pay to thwart an officer of the King especially when he carried warrants from Henry. His hand closed around the coin. Elspeth seemed not to notice the interplay between the two men.

"Tomorrow being Sunday I would love to join you for Mass in the morning."

Elspeth lowered her voice and whispered to Donley.

"If you want a woman for the night I suggest you visit the Hever Tavern and buy a woman. They have many there who can help relieve your needs".

“If I take any wench to my bed this night it shall be you.”

The tension between the three was almost palatable. It was the Sergeant who broke the stalemate.

”I fear that I cannot spare a man to guard your herb garden Master Physician.”


“And if you stay with the good Sergeant’s lady wife Master Physician then those that may need your services this night would not know where to find you.”

"If I take any wench to my bed this night it shall be you.” Donley's words caused Elspeth to take a sharp intake of breath and she hoped it was not audible. This man had one intention in his heart and she knew exactly what it was. And when the Sergeant told her he could spare no one and the logical reasons why she should return to her quarters her fate seemed to be sealed. She was to become a woman this night at Donley's hands and there was nothing she could do. Unless ... UNLESS!

Elspeth's eyes were dark as she tried to deepen her voice "Is Master Boleyn at home?" The sergeant nodded "And Mistress Mary?" It was a sensitive subject because the latter was still breast feeding the King's bastard son. Again the Sergeant nodded. Elspeth continued "You know I'm the physician's son" she looked across at Donley knowing he had guessed the truth "and I was in attendance with my father when the baby was born." Again the sergeant nodded. "Then you will recall Master Boleyn said if either I or my father needed anything we only had to ask. I will ask Master Boleyn whether he can spare someone from his guards. I'm sure he will oblige".

The sky lit up as the storm that had been threatening all night descended on Hever and great drops of warm rain began to fall. One flash of lightning lit up Donley's face while another showed the nervous look in Elspeth's eyes. She had played her last card and she knew there was little left to try. Except prayer. If the Boleyns couldn't help she prayed the storm would become a flood confining her and Donley to Hever Castle, in separate rooms for the night.

Donley savored Elspeth sharp intake of breath, her firm young breasts straining against her bindings and hinting at the truth of who she really was. There game of cat and mouse continued as the young maiden tried one last time to escape the lecherous plans that Donley had for her.

"Is Master Boleyn at home? and Mistress Mary?"

Thomas Donley knew well that that Mary Boleyn’s whelp was the king’s bastard son. Donley knew that the child was far from being King Henry’s bastards. He was curious to see what the girl’s next move would be.

"You know I'm the physician's son and I was in attendance with my father when the baby was born. Then you will recall Master Boleyn said if either I or my father needed anything we only had to ask. I will ask Master Boleyn whether he can spare someone from his guards. I'm sure he will oblige".

The sergeant looked very uncomfortable at being put in an untenable position between the King’s officer and the Master Physician.

“The hour is late and I am sure the sergeant has no desire to call Lord Boleyn from his bed.”

As Donley spoke it began to rain and with each drop that soaked their clothing Elspeth's secret came closer and closer to being revealed to all. Donley leaned closer to the hapless young maiden and whispered.

“Shall we wait and let the Good Lord’s rain reveal your deception and who you really are wench?”

He gave Elspeth little time to think.

“Shall we retire to my rooms or is it to be the local Chapter house of the abbey so you may answer the charges of witchcraft?’

The rain was coming down in stair rods as Elspeth's white shirt became wetter and wetter. She saw her last attempts to save her innocence disappear as the Lightning became more intense and the thunder more violent. Her hair was soaked and her breasts were now straining against the white ribbons holding them flat while her physician overall was still stained with blood.

Elspeth had a sudden inspiration and turning to the Sergeant she added "It is dangerous to travel so with permission I'll stay in the dinning area until the morning." She had every intention of escaping in the dead of night. Again the the Lightning flashed and her breasts were almost visible. The clap of thunder was violent and loud causing Elspeth's girly side to come out as she screamed with shock. Recovering her composure she said to the Sergeant "I'm sorry, I suffered a shock in a storm when I was a child and it's never left me".

An even brighter flash and another criush sent her racing into the arms of Donley and felt his lustful gaze fall on her "I'm sorry sir!" She said before whispering "I'm sure we can come to an arrangement. My father has money and I know we can negotiate."

Each moment that they stood in the rain Elspeth’s thinly veiled disguise would become less that convincing as the storm grew in intensity.

“It is dangerous to travel so with permission I'll stay in the dining area until the morning."

A clap of thunder and a flash of lightening split the night. Before the sergeant could answer Elspeth request another clap of thunder and a blinding flash of lightening drove the young maiden into Donley’s arms.

"I'm sorry, I suffered a shock in a storm when I was a child and it's never left me".

The sergeant doffed his cap to the Master Physician and sought the warmth and comfort of his room and his wife and new born child and a bit of ale. He was anxious to wet the head of the child with his mates as well.

"I'm sorry sir!"

Then she lowered her voice and whispered to Thomas Donley,

"I'm sure we can come to an arrangement. My father has money and I know we can negotiate."

He held the headstrong maiden in his arms as the storm raged around them.

“No need to spend a wet and chilly night in a cold dining room. You will share my rooms and a cheery fire and I shall enjoy………..”

Donley let his voice trail off but his lustful gaze left no doubt what he intended to share with the calmly young maiden.

Elspeth acknowledged defeat and struggling to hold the tears in. She nodded as she tried to calm her frightened horse. She had one more card to play "May I suggest we take the horses to the stables and stay with them for the night." Another clap of thunder rocked the surrounding area and echoed back off the castle walls. "In the morning I'll go home, check if I have any calls to make and I'll come to you tomorrow night. I'll come dressed as a woman and I'll try to please you".

She didn't wait for Donley to respond before walking towards the stables and the hay barn. The next bolt of lightning frightened both her and her horse but she kept walking sensing Donley behind her. Her fate was now firmly in his hands and she knew it.

Elspeth knew she would soon become a woman. She wanted the whole thing over and done with so she could get on with her life.

The young maiden slumped in Donley’s arms as she slowly whispered,

"May I suggest we take the horses to the stables and stay with them for the night."

It did not take much imagination for Thomas Donley to realize that this calmly young beauty was trying to avoid her fate at his hands. It was conformed as she softly continued,

"In the morning I'll go home, check if I have any calls to make and I'll come to you tomorrow night. I'll come dressed as a woman and I'll try to please you".

Donley had no intention of letting this young maiden slip through his fingers, of giving her the time to marshal her forces to thwart him. She had already proven that she had a quick agile mind, and an admiral determination to escape her fate.

“Well Master Physician if you prefer a roll in the hay to the comforts of my heath and bed, so be it!”

With those few words Thomas Donley made it quite clear that by dawn Elspeth would no longer be a virgin. His sparkling haze eyes slowly took in every detail of the young maiden’s disguise and how the driving rain molded the soaking clothe to her lithe young body as she turned to lead her mount to the stables. The horse and the girl both shied at the next clap and peel of thunder.

The sweet aroma of hay and the strong bestial scent of the horses and the warmth of their bodies filled the stables. Thomas Donley took Elspeth into his arms; he turned her to face him as he crushed her young body to his. He held the young maiden’s frighten gaze as his lips lowered to hers. His kiss was firm and demanding, the tip of his tongue slid over the sensual bow of Elspeth’s lips, the even white of her teeth, demanding entry into the summer wine sweetness of her chaste mouth.

Elspeth slowly led her horse to the shelter of the stable and began to remove his tack "Try to be calm Arrow, the storm will pass". Despite her fear of Donley and her dread of what might happen that night she knew she had to put the welfare of her horse first. Looking round she saw a rugged sheet which she used as a towel to dry the anxious beast. On her left Donley was caring for his horse and seeing another cloth she reached down and gave it to him so he could dry his frightened animal. In the middle of all this drama she and Donley were bound together in one purpose. Their horses came first.

The storm seemed to be passing over when Donley led the frightened Elspeth to a dry area of the stable where she was spun round to face him. Her heart was pounding and her legs were shaking like jelly when suddenly she was drawn forward to receive the first passionate kiss of her life as Donley crushed her mouth to his. Fear took hold of her as she felt the soft warmth of his tongue trying to invade her mouth. She spluttered as her teeth were opened and her tongue felt his engage with her's.

Using all the strength she had Elspeth pushed Donley away. "NO! I'M SORRY!" She shouted before whispering "I ... I can't do this! I've never been with a man before! I've lived like a man, dressed as a man because I want to work in medicine. Why do you HAVE to bed me when there are hundreds of women who would share your bed? I don't even know what to do. I'm sorry, I cannot do this!"

She turned to leave the dry area and return to her horse when she laid her last card "Besides ... it's my time in the month, I'm unclean". She tried to hold a poker face as she attempted to bluff her would be conqueror.

Slowly Elspeth yielded to Thomas Donley, her moist ripe lips parting for him. His tongue savored the summer wine sweetness of the young virgin’s mouth, as his tongue led hers in a dance as old as time its self. Her bodies melting to his, then suddenly her hands were on his chest as she struggled to push him away.

"NO! I'M SORRY!"

Elspeth gasped, fears shinning in her soft tear shimmering eyes. The question was it fear of him, or fear of her own body’s reaction to that sinful kiss.

"I ... I can't do this! I've never been with a man before! I've lived like a man, dressed as a man because I want to work in medicine. Why do you HAVE to bed me when there are hundreds of women who would share your bed? I don't even know what to do. I'm sorry, I cannot do this!"

Donley still held the trembling young maiden in his arms as she struggled not only with him but with herself as well.

"Besides ... it's my time in the month, I'm unclean".

Thomas Donley paused only for a heart beat or two, but when Elspeth demurely averted her gaze from his he knew she was lying.

“Perhaps then you will have to please me with that sweet mouth of yours the way they do it in the French Court Mistress.”

As he spoke he pulled at the drawstring that kept Elspeth’s shirt closed, to reveal the bindings that covered her secret.

“Shall we get you out of those wet close.”

It was not so much a question but a statement of fact.

“Perhaps then you will have to please me with that sweet mouth of yours the way they do it in the French Court Mistress.”

Elspeth was trembling as the tears ran down her cheeks. She had no idea what happened at the French Court but before she could object Donley began to undress her with the demand "Shall we get you out of those wet clothes.”

This wasn't happening, she'd awaken in a moment and find it was all a dream. Elspeth was a good, clean, innocent girl who only wanted to bring healing to others and because of the time she lived in she had no alternative than to dress as a man.

She went on the attack "Why do you have to bed me? Is it because I'm dressed as a man? Do you like men? I'm sure you'll find a man or two who can satisfy you. As for me I don't even know what to do."

By now the storm had passed and the rain had stopped leaving the odd rumble of thunder in the distance. On her left was a pitch fork and Elspeth tried to move closer to it to use a weapon.

But her skills were in healing, not harming and she didn't want to use it. Instead she appealed to Donley "Master Donley, please, please don't make me do this. I'm untouched, innocent in every way. Please ... Please don't take that away from me!"

Standing there with her shirt open and her taped breasts exposed she changed tack "Or, let me go home tonight, let me change out of these boys clothes into something really feminine and tomorrow I'll willingly come to your bed. I'm in your hands sir!"

"Why do you have to bed me? Is it because I'm dressed as a man? Do you like men? I'm sure you'll find a man or two who can satisfy you. As for me I don't even know what to do."

The violence of the evening was fading only the distant rumbled of thunder to proclaimed nature’s recent fury. Yet even as the storm subsided Elspeth still found herself trapped. Thomas Donley mere smiled at the young Maiden’s accusation that he preferred men to woman. This young wench still fought to avoid her fate. Her threats seeming to have no effect on the man. The young maiden pleaded.

"Master Donley, please, please don't make me do this. I'm untouched, innocent in every way. Please ... Please don't take that away from me!"

Elspeth stood before Donley her shirt hanging open her bindings clearly exposed. Her soft tear shimmering eyes pleaded so eloquently for him to have mercy on her.

"Or, let me go home tonight, let me change out of these boys clothes into something really feminine and tomorrow I'll willingly come to your bed. I'm in your hands sir!"

“Do you take me for a fool Mistress? That I should believe that you would return on the morrow and bend to my will?”

It was clear that Donley did not believe her in the least. His hands then drew open the draw string of Elspeth’s birches.

“As for as preferring men to woman I can dispel that accusation right now Mistress!”
