but I can't seem to do it, as much as I try.

Can you all help me? All I ask is one or two lines from each of you who wish to participate and following the poet before you to complete a group poem from our collective experience. It is not an erotic poem, but I would like to piece one together for all of us who have lost a person or someone we have known at some point. I am feeling a bit sad about an event close to me: the event:

http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_7080.aspx

My start to it is:

The sun casts a shadow where there should be light

The sun casts a shadow where there should be light
and clouds, in the sky forever suspended,
disintegrate and fall in waste.

How is it that we see such precious light
dimmed before the night does come?

Thank you so much, m!!!

Is it to comfort in the dark hours that we
may know it comes again only to cast
shadows anew?

Fog swirls round, thick and cloying, chilling to the bone.
Covering all with grey sadness,
leaving a soft dew of unshed tears.

we know the rain must cease
yet somber dark remains

and then the sun casts her shadow

I took the liberty of placing my lines above the final strophe in your version.

Then I took further liberties and riffed off your and LH's lines. I hope I can be excused but I had such an image of clouds that I wanted to be the poet who spoke of rain first. :p

In all seriousness, my grief is for all who pass too soon but my words are in tribute to a youth who died on his 16th birthday. His brother and sister with the support of their parents readied him for viewing. Those closest to him combed his hair, his girlfriend lovingly shaded his eyes and skin with tones of life, his friends and teammates folded tokens of memory into his hands and bore his casket. To some people this would seem morbid, I feel it was a beautiful way for his family to allow us all closure.

Death comes to all of us and although it may be difficult to bear the thought of living on without that spark a friend offers, if we allow ourselves the solace of one last affection to the dead, sometimes, going on is made easier.

The sun casts a shadow
where there should be light
and clouds, in the sky suspended,
disintegrate and fall in waste.
Today the nimbus hovers
dulling all that stands below
we know tomorrow's sun will bring
a sky full of warmth we envy.
Even so, we know the rain
must cease yet somber dark remains
when once again, the sun casts
night's shadow where there should be light.

Absolutely beautiful, and teary to me damn you!

(I take a bit of liberty, myself, in removing "night's"in the last line)

I think you're a closet poetry editor. You're welcome to use that poem and my story if you think anyone will derive comfort from it.

It's been 5 years since his drowning and I still cry when I remember how openly we were allowed to touch and to grieve for him. I hope these young men's friends will have similar circumstances available to them.

Our friends set up a scholarship trust and a memorial football night game to honour their child, so every year we remember, not that many of us will forget.

I am also so sorry for your loss and your friends ... greatly - greatly sorry. I have been welling up for days, C. The tears never stop for any loss - really. :) You have added beautifully. Thank you.
(and hugs)
