We've had quite a few threads involving the Top List: The #1 poem, The Top 10 Poems, and I think there was one for the 100th poem. Anyway, checking out the top list can give us some ideas about what kind of poems are being read, and which ones are best liked. Perhaps, we can look at what makes a poem a "Top List poem." What did that poet do that works?
Of course, there are poems on the list that are there because they're really dirty ;) or a poet's friends voted it there. That's cool, but some of those poems may not always be good poetry. So the poems I'll mention on this thread will be poems with more than 11 or 12 votes. Sometimes the first dozen votes a new poem receives are "friend" votes (unless the poem has been around for a while, or it's exceptionally good.) Once a poem is on the list and exposed to more readers, you get a better idea of an unbiased score.

a serene day ends
with small talk
over Chardonnay
and shrimp scampi

a slow dance
unrehearsed
across the kitchen tile
entices a giggly kiss
turns torrid in the moonlight

plenitude of candles
arranged about the bath
warm ambiance
soon matched by flow
of water stirring a frothy brew
tickling bubbles and soothing salts

unwrapping you
an extended clash between
touch and function
hands mesmerized
by warm soft curves

tepid touch of toe
to test
finding it soothing
we slip beneath the bubbles

a steamy shangri-la
sensual moments
dally into surreal sensation
spawn of soul
lover's linger
preamble into passion
spilling into the dawn

Any ideas on what keeps this poem on the top list? What works or doesn't work for you?

Feel free to browse the Top List and find a poem you'd like to post here, with your thoughts on why it's a Top List Poem.

I get this from WD's Steamy Shangi-La. It's a delightful moment between two lovers. The words are brief strokes of brilliance that create imagery enough to paint a clear picture in anyone's mind.

It's sexual in nature and involves a well-planned evening like two lover's who've known each other for a time might have together.

Plus the enticing title will stand out from many poems on the list.

Not to mention that good poetry attracts readers and WD has many well-written poems. If they find one good poem, they might look for more amongst the remaining little mysteries.

Also in the Top Ten of the Poetry Top List is one by poet RisiaSkye. I have been a fan of this interesting woman since the day I clicked onto this web site and discovered the mine field of talent here.

Adult Concerns
by RisiaSkye©

Learning protocol and refinement
involuntary confinement
Attending Very Proper functions &
seeking early retirement

Sucking in information
enduring daily degradation
Countless sleepness nights &
retaining legal representation

Health is neglected
love's been rejected
Even sunshine is unsafe &
they say fould play is suspected

Work place submission
political revision
Praying against violence &
that the cancer's in remission

The house is on a fault line
all I have isn't mine
Mustn't forget the children &
We're all just biding time.

Amazingly, the title might draw readers in with its mention of Adult, but I think they are likely surprised by what they find – an intelligent list of what they likely concern themselves with on a daily basis.

Forever intriguing, that RisiaSkye.

Adult Concerns is an excellent "grown-up" kind of adult poem. You can tell that she's been there and done that, and she certainly knows how to tell us about it.

I Want A Girl

I want a girl
Who’s rich like Bill.
Whose portfolio screams for release.
Futures, stocks,
Diamonds and rocks,
Coming this way to please.

I want a girl
Who remembers my days,
Ones that reverberate in my head.
Holiday, birth,
Period and earth
Present her presence in bed.

I want a girl
Who wears short skirts,
Whose sweaters are a bit too tight.
Sans bra and panties.
Never ones like my Auntie’s.
Posing boldly against the night light.

I want a girl
Whose wit contains me,
Profound phrases flying against the ceiling.
Simile, joke…
Laugh ‘til I croak.
My head spinning and mind reeling.

I want a girl
Whose nature is stable,
A solid rock to hold my sand.
Power and grace
But never in haste
A Yin for my yang takes my hand.

I want a girl
Who makes love like a leopard,
Driving fear into those around her.
Accurate, slick
Claws to the quick
Devastating triumphs, resounding thunder.

I want a girl
Whose body is an adventure,
Never quite sailing the same route twice.
Nipples, tits,
N’all the naughty bits
Throes of orgasm, we both come thrice.

I want a girl
Who drives me insane,
Whose emotions rattle my ration.
Laughter, dread
Tears on the bed.
Quiet moments revealing our passion.

I want a girl
Who likes for a moment,
But loves for a lifetime to come.
Heaving chests
Breasts to breasts
Hearts beating…together as one.

I want a girl
Who needs all she gives,
Whose talent diminished where mine shone.
Needy, sighs
I hold, she cries.
A girl who wants this girl as her own.

Why does this poem stay at the top? It's witty and intelligent! Judo makes her poem sexy, fun, and tender, all at the same time.

Panty Queen

I stared down in the open drawer
surprised at what was there
wrapped up in a sandwich bag
lay another pair.

This was so demeaning
I didn't know what to think
leaving me these sexy gifts
today a pretty pink.

Who would go to this extreme
and play this crazy game
who could I dare accuse
who would share the blame.

Leaving panties for me to find
so soiled, every pair
feeding me, a fetish fiend
with their daily wear.

All around the office here
girls are making eyes
licking lips and swinging hips
the flashing of their thighs.

They know what kind of woman I am
I'll take this lying down
using me they way they want
and passing their panties down.

Tonight, while in my bed
I'll use this newest pair
breathing in the pungent scent
to guess the days of wear.

Stroking my hood until I come
licking the panties clean
cry with shame until I sleep
it's not a pretty scene.

In the morning lust returns
shame completely gone
being the slut I know I am
I put the panties on.

I spend the day, a sexual high
while showing a casual air
giving the girls their every chance
to provide another pair.

Two new girls were hired this week
one is just a teen
passing a note to my desk
"are you the panty queen?"

"Cause if you are, I have a pair
and after everyone's gone
you can sniff your heart away
as long as I have them on."

There it was, I couldn't believe
she offering herself to me
returning the note, an added quote
"I'm waiting on bended knees."

Shortly after the office closed
she pushed back in her chair
"crawl to me you goddamn slut
and wash my pubic hair."

Who was this teenage child
ringing my alarm
with a wink she spread her thighs
adding to her charm.

Such a truth, this dream of mine
at last, my lust so bare
"please little miss, don't cover it up
by showing that you care."

"Use me as you will little girl
my guard is stored away
piss, lick, whatever you want
I'll do anything you say.

The sudden slap across my face
I groveled at her feet
nostrils buried in her socks
so sweaty, and so sweet.

Fingers entangled in my hair
pulling me to her twat
wonder how the body knows
to heat a spot so hot.

She fucked my face with such disdain
the shame gave me a high
being used with such disgust
I sucked her wetter dry.

Soon the word was passed around
I was the slut to use
from 8 to 5, I felt alive
wallowing in my abuse.

My shame is my elation
my alias is my demean
but what the hell, it fits me well
the office panty queen.

Is this Littlemissblair poem on the top list because it's so dirty? Yes, it's dirty, but Littlemissblair does dirty, and rhyme, well! She reminds me of an extremely naughty version of Judo! :D

More mysteries of the top list...

I'm still closely examining the poetry on the top list. It's like navigating the Bermuda Triangle! So far, I've learned a few things that make a poem worthy of the top list. A well-crafted poem with fresh imagery is sometimes recognized by readers and voted to the list. Other times, the poet's popularity as being a swell guy or hot chick, gets their poem to the top. And since this is an adult site, many poems make it to the list because they are so f***ing dirty!

Here's another top list poem:
Afterglow
by Thesandman
rank: 70
score: 4.21
votes: 61
date submitted: 06/19/01

In the afterglow of passion,
Are where silent words are best.
A gentle touch, a lingering kiss,
Upon a silken breast,

To hear her rapid heart beat,
Knowing when it first was there,
The fragrance of her body,
The softness of her hair.

When touches private are allowed,
Probing fingers, moisture…wet.
And passion soars above the clouds,
Where rapture's passions met.

Throaty, uninhibited…
Sounds of love are heard.
Of slippery sensations…
Soft spoken, erotic word.

The inner heat surrounds,
As two become as one.
And laughter joins the sensual
And naughty… delicious fun.

Still…desires wait.
Lingering so wonderfully inside.
Bodies meshed together,
Legs spread obscenely wide.

Came then need's own burning,
Hard nipple's signaling the power.
Flickering light touches, rapid tongue,
The opening of her flower.

Sweet is the nectar waiting there,
Gathered in loves own sweet way.
The climax of which, remembered still,
In words too lost to say.

For lingering still in afterglow,
Lying silent as we do.
For you are still apart of me.
And I, apart of you.

Sweeter still in afterglow,
Soft sounds…your soft felt touch.
For I have loved you tenderly,
And have never loved as much.

Afterglow has made a home on the top list. It's been there for as long as I can remember. Is it because the readers have found it to be so well-crafted? Is it because it starts with an A? Do readers go to the erotic poem index and start reading and voting on the A poems? Is it because of Thesandman's popularity? Is it because readers can relate to that magnificent afterglow that they have personally experienced?
I'm not sure about the exact reason, but I do know that the poem has too many cliché's for me to find it appealing. But that's just my personal opinion. Whatever the reason for it being on the list, and no matter what you may think of this poem, it's got what it takes to stay on the top of the heap.
