I've been going back and bookmarking stories I read and liked and while I've found a bunch I can't find one I remember. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.
The story was about a girl living on the streets to avoid an abusive father. Her dad was a cop and she was afraid he would use his position to find her if she was living in a house and working. She even avoided the shelters. She had a sister with 2 kids by different guys, I think, but was living in a shelter. The main character had been abused by the dad and an uncle. She is "rescued" by another man, happens to be a cop, after he tries to track down some thugs who broke into a video rental store and stole some money. She happened to be sleeping in the entryway to get out of the cold and found the cash they dropped. They later come back looking for the money and try to rape her, but are scared off by the cop. She ends up giving the cash to her sister to buy presents for her nephews for Christmas and stays with the cop who found her instead of leaving with the bus ticket she bought trying to go to an art school.
