Trump's splendid little war

I’m thrilled that Maduro is gone. So are the people of Venezuela, by all accounts. That's a good thing.

I’m worried, given the historical precedents in China, Cuba, Iran, Nicaragua, Syria, and other countries, that what comes after him might be worse.

What is the constitutional authority for this? Where do we get the authority to enforce US law in foreign countries?

Isn't Congress supposed to declare war?

Nation building is always a bad idea.

I know they plan to have an election down the road, but why put Maduro's VP in charge (even temporarily)? (BTW, his name doesn't sound very Venezuelan.) Why not the winner of the election?

If we’re justifying it under the Monroe Doctrine, when are we going in to topple the Cuban regime?

If we’re justifying it under international law and/or claiming authority to enforce US law against foreign regimes, when are we going in to arrest Xi Jinping?

If ā€œwe’re running Venezuelaā€ now, does that mean we run Citgo? Is that what this is about?

Who's paying for this?

I hope this turns out to be a short-term thing like Reagan's intervention in Grenada or LBJ's intervention in the Dominican Republic, not another endless war like Iraq or Afghanistan.

Why was one South American president actually convicted of drug smuggling pardoned whilst another has been kidnapped for similar alleged activity.
Was maduro’s real crime not paying the requisite kickback?

Oil.

Trump’s plan to seize and revitalize Venezuela’s oil industry faces major hurdles

American refineries and Venezuelan crude are made for each other …
Years ago, American refineries on the Gulf Coast were optimized to handle that kind of heavy crude at a time when U.S. oil production was falling and Venezuelan and Mexican crude was plentiful. So refineries would love to have more access to Venezuela’s crude because it would help them operate more efficiently, and it tends to be a little cheaper.

It’s in demand …
Venezuela produces the kind of heavy crude oil that’s needed for diesel fuel, asphalt and other fuels for heavy equipment. Diesel is in short supply around the world because of the sanctions on oil from Venezuela and Russia and because America’s lighter crude oil can’t easily replace it.

But US oil companies need a favorable government in Venezuela in order to capitalize on Crooked Donnie’s gift to them.
