Retreat is a good idea......we don't have it in us as a country to do what's needed to take it and make it pay off.

It had to happen sooner or later. I am glad it is happening with a Republican president.

I am glad the War in Vietnam was lost under a Republican president. That way the Republicans could not blame it on the Democrats.

In his memoirs Eisenhower said that as many as 80% of the Vietnamese supported Ho Chi Minh. The men I have talked to who fought in Vietnam agreed that the Communists had a lot of support among the South Vietnamese.

A Vietnamese refugee I dated told me the same thing.

The Taliban must have a lot of support among the Afghans, or it would have been easy to defeat them.

I hope we learn from this sorry chapter in our history to leave other countries alone. We should have learned that during the War in Vietnam.

I have no problem with a policy of pulling U.S. troops out of Afghanistan. That was my main problem with Obama when he was running the first time. His policy was to beef up U.S. troop strength there. I don't see that that has gotten anything more than Americans killed being where they have no business being.

US interests in Afghanistan are modest and should be limited to stuffing up any other nation that thinks they can muscle in; China, Russia, India, Pakistan and Iran spring to mind.

It should be left to the CIA professionals; a modest budget should be sufficient to keep any one of the various factions from getting too powerful. Spray the poppy crop now and again, snuff out the occasional stroppy local, that sort of thing.
